Default about to take the plunge

Hi everyone,

Long time listner first time poster. So I am buying an XB in a couple days. I have a few questions to ask before I do it. Any help would be great.

1. Did you guys get the extended warrenty, I have always gotten them for my other cars, however this is a car I am really trying to keep the cost down. I mean 1000 is not to bad, but I just want to get your thoughts.

2. What do you guys think about the stereo, I have an ipod, but I was thinking the aux input should be fine. Does it sound any better with the dock connector.

3. Is the satalite(xm, syrious) worth it. I mean 450 seems high, I can just get a stand alone unit for 75 bucks and hook it up.

4.My wife thinks the inside gets all scratched up. Is this true? She is kind of a honda girl, so she is a little scared to not get a honda. So i guess the question is how does the interrior age?

I bought my xB today, bone stock with the 5-spd. I did not get extended warranties or any add ons. It comes equipped rather nicely, and I'm sure I'd end up voiding out the warranty with mods anyway. I stay away from extended warranties because they try to get you by saying you didn't change oil on time, etc. Not Scion in particular, just my general experience. Some of the options they try to sell you, like wheel protection, costs more than a new set of good wheels! All in all though man, I expected a rough Samurai like ride and shoddy construction. It is built well, and the stick is surprisingly smooth. I spent 3 hours just driving today, and I can honestly say it handles really well. The AUX input was good enough for my MP3. I really like the sound.

I never get extended warranties - just added profit for the dealer. I don't think you will have much use for one with a Toyota product anyway.

Stock stereo is okay. I did not want to dump the money into it for the satelite and ipod upgrades as I planned on putting something nicer together. I have an Alpine head unit with a Sirius satelite, ipod, etc. Sirius is great, I have had both XM Sirius, I prefer the Sirius programing plus I like Howard Stern.

Interior wear - No issues on mine yet. 6k miles of pretty heavy use, I haul my (big) dogs around and I am in the process of moving so I have been hauling a bunch of crap around. Having said that, I think they could have put better quality carpet in it.

I only have an opinion on the satelitte radio. We have the Sirius from the dealership in one xB and the stand alone unit in the other. The one from the dealership, installed under the seat SUCKS because the Scion radio does not scroll and only provides one half-line of text.

While perusing the stations on Sirius/Scion radio, you don't get to see the whole artist and song title displayed on your radio and you certainly don't have the benifits of searching/perusing the different channels before you select them to listen.

Plus, with the stand alone units, you can save songs in S-seek too. You can't do that on the Scion radio.

My opinion, the xB satelite radio BLOWS!

Wow thanks so much guys. Great replies.

So The only thing I think I will add is the

Taillights, I know they are overpriced, but I just hate the stock ones, and actually really like the way the add on's look

15' alloys, I just think that they are actually a good value for the money.

Again thanks for the replys

I got my TYC tails after the fact with my $50 gift card I got from Scion. I got them from a Toyota dealer that posts on EBay. Save a bunch. You can get any part you need after the fact from one of several Scion dealers. I got the extended warranty, but I drive a whole bunch. One of the Scion dealers around here gives away free Sirius right and left to any stock headunit Scion owners. Look for a deal before you shell out $450.

Is it the actual sirius head unit that is integrated into the head unit or some sort of deal they have with another company. If it's the actual factory unit how did you get this. My dealer wont give me anything at all.

As far as the scratches go, it is really easy to "scuff" the interior of them for some reason if that is what you are referring to. It is not an actual scratch really because it can be rubbed out, but it happens easily.

The alloys are cheaper online, and you get to keep your steelies for snow tires (dunno if it snows where you're at).

I use a bed comforter if I want to protect the cargo area when moving something.

The extended warranty is a waste of money and a huge profit for the dealer. Their actual cost is about 1/3rd of what they charge. Most people don't realize that dealers will haggle on the price of extended warranty, tho I don't know if that's part of Scion pure pricing.
The interior is made of cheap plastic and will scratch very easily. that's one of the reasons they can sell the car for only $15k.

I would get the base radio included with the xb and for $150 you can get a radio with sirius included (not the stand alone unit). $450 is CRAZY! Also, i think you can get an extended warranty at any time, so in 3 years if you feel like getting one, get it.

well heres my thigughts

i got the extended warranty just because my last car, everything fell apart after the basic warranty ended. plus mods wont void warranty. they have to prove the part made the part that was warrinted fail. so exhaust would only void the exhaust warranty, springs and wheels would void the suspension components etc.

get the car stock. dont add a thing. you can get everything here in the classifieds or ebay or the sponsored sections of the site. i got my car base with a spoiler and floor mats. thats all i needed. and cost were kept way down anyways. the extendede warranty is good for something that breaks and covered. like i have a AC problem and Gas filler problem i gotta take in. these are covered according to the threads ive seen here in the past. enjoy your xB!!

I agree don't get the extended warranty, if your plan the mod the car. Also if you are handy, buy the parts over the counter, you will save money. You would be surprized how eazy the xB comes apart (i.e. taillights).

Regarding your question about the iPod upgrade, I think the AUX input would pretty much sound as good as the iPod connector. IMO, the advantage of the iPod upgrade is that your iPod will be charged when connected (though you could buy an external charger) and you can control the iPod via the head unit. Control isn't as easy as on the iPod itself, but it may be easier than fumbing with the iPod while driving.

Also (at least w/ my iPod 20 GB), plugging into the bottom of the iPod will give you a line out that doesn't vary the volume with the volume the iPod is set for. That means the volume is totally controlled by the head unit and you don't have to worry about what the volume of the iPod was set to when it was plugged in.

Nice to have features, but definitely not must haves.

You're right about the wheels, they're not a total ripoff. OTOH, if you live in a place where there's a Discount Tire outlet, you can do better. You'd save $200 on a very similar set of Konig Reasons, for example... even more on many of the 5 spoke models they offer... and I'm sure that other retailers have similar pricing... Google up discount tire, take a look...

Use the money you save for a set of seatcovers from seatcoverfactory.com- they offer a variety of styles and fabrics, and they fit really well. search the forum for more info... there's some indication that protectants aren't compatible with the interior plastics, so study up on that before schlorping anything on... this is from a couple of posts about problems with xA's...

Extended warranty? Nah. It's a Toyota, so if it makes it thru the standard warranty period without issues, chances are good it'll go to 150K without any, either. Built to last.

The price on the ipod upgrade radio isn't good, either- for little more, you can get a really good ipod compatible aftermarket HU and dash adapter gizmo...

It all kinda depends on if you have the money upfront for the stuff, or if you need to wrap it up in the purchase price... and the payment plan....

box = happiness no questions asked., by far this is the most reliable car you can buy. Forget the exteded warranty, i bought mine completely stock and i went ahead and did a little here and there. i love my box, the interior is nice, the fabric seems like it can take a beating; for stereo i have a clarions vrx755vd and i love it but you can buy a pioneer for about 150.00 with a ipod hook up and will sound a whole lot clear and loud than whats on the car, plus thats the whole idea behind scion, to personalize and make it youre own.. need i say more....

I need to add something to my above post- the only problem with aftermaket HU's is that you'll have to sacrifice the steering wheel controls, afaik, kinda a bummer...

edit- typo

Default what sticker

all scions are one price; they go under the no hassle policy wich means that where every you go the base price will be the same; unless the dealer decides to add goodies and then charge extra for them. My advice dont be from the dealer; can you say ebay. You can find anything and you can shopp around for parts. Hope you enjoy youre ride as much as i do. and im out!!!
