Any non-Californian Scion owners...
For those of you that live outside California, how did you get your xB? The reason I ask is I'm trying to avoid the high taxes out there, and I know that one way to do it is to buy it out of state. Is that even a possibility or do you have to pay the 8 or so percent tax? Gotta save every dime you can, right??
Thanks!!
if you buy your scion from out of state and have it shipped to you, you can avoid paying cali sales tax. I live in NH, so I made out on the deal because we have no sales tax here. There is a catch, you can not drive your car into cali for 90 days, otherwise you will end up paying that 8% after the fact, plus they tack on another fee. If you decide to take a road trip to cali... make sure you don't get pulled over .. hehe
Wow, talk about spactacular information!!! I love it. Here's my next question, if you go there to fill out the paper work and then have it shipped, can you do the same thing or does one have to do it remotely?
I did mine totally thru the mail, and had no problems.
You may be able to do the paperwork there in Cali, but the dealership might consider that taking delivery, and then you would have to pay the sales tax.
Anyway, if your state charges sales tax, you will have to pay it when you register the car in your home state.
But, keep pursuing your Scion purchase. Just about everybody who has one loves it!

I have to take delivery across the state border to avoid CA tax, so I or a dealer employee will drive the car and a notary just inside AZ will witness the transaction.
I will pay AZ tax when I register the car.
Another way I could do it is meet them at the AZ border ( about a hundred miles closer) and do the paperwork as described above. You could do something similar (in Las Vegas perhaps?). There are other posts that describe this method and if I recall they purchased in San Jose. Most of this could be done by phone as far as ordering and purchasing. You will have to pay a driver to get it to you, but still much cheaper than Having it shipped. The lowest cost I got for shipping was $475 to Phoenix.
I did all my paperwork through the mail as well. No problems, only downfall is that if something with the paperwork is wrong, they have to send you the paperwork all over again. Good luck in getting your Scion though. It's worth waiting for.
Great information all!! The more I think about it the more I think I'll buy it in California. Tax here in Utah is only 1 percent lower than there and by the time I pay for a driver or shipping, it'll ptobably end up being more than just buying it in California. The other option is what bicepeak said, by going to Las Vegas and picking it up. I'll still end up having to register it here and pay the tax... so looks like I'm going back to Cali!!
as far as taxes go, regardless of where you purchase it, you always get taxed at your home state tax rate.
only thing is is that when you go to the DMV to get your title in your home state, they ask for the complete tax payment at once. mine came out to about $1100. ouch

Here's another question for all you non-Californians out there. Where do you get your Scion serviced and worked on if there's a problem? Can you just take it to your local Toyota dealer??
