Anyone remember
when the xB was just out and EVERYPLACE you would go people would bug you about that odd looking 'box' 'toaster' etc? I swear no lie when I got my first xB when they dropped on the east coast in 04 and no matter where I went I would have someone trying to talk to me about it or I would get the stares from everyone, just driving along and you would see car after car grilling your ride.
For me I am really glad that is over and the 'newness' of them has faded some, my wife mentioned this to me last night and I figured I would see if there were any others who dealt with this. I guess I am just not a people person because I actually started driving the hooptie so I would not have to be held up everywhere I went

Initially was stopped by someone asking about the box nearly every time I went somewhere. Now days there are enough around in my area, that they aren't so much of a curiosity. I still get folks asking about the box, but they're not as perplexed seeming as those original ones.
Of course thee are still parts of the country where a box is a real rarity, and in those areas you still get folks running off the road and circling you on the highway, and just stopping you at traffic lights to ask.
The most fun was driving around in Canada and having people pace me in the next lane on arterials or city streets franticly signaling for me to lower the window and talk. Or to drive by a packed city bus stop and having all the conversations stop and the heads swivel to follow the odd looking car driving down the street.
It's still fun, for the most part, but it is nice that things have calmed down around home.

The novelty has worn off for a lot of the country, I think. Or, I THOUGHT, until I went to a wedding this summer that required me to drive through rural Minnesota and Wisconsin...
I was driving along some farms, and I saw some farmer bob's jaw drop as he passed me in oncoming in his, like, 1985 F-150 or something, and then three seconds later my passengers start screaming that he ran off the road. Whoops!
If anybody MISSES the attention, I've discovered how to get it back - I finally convinced my sister-in-law to get her OWN toaster (instead of coveting mine!). Anyway, we always take the boxes when we go someplace, and I'll tell you, if you can find another xB to cruise with you get all sorts of fun looks
I'm sure the fact that one of them is Salsa Red doesn't hurt, either. ;)
