Default Best way to protect the xB on a long trip.....

Rent a car and leave the xB home safe in my garage! That's what we did last year when we drove out to Chicago (12 hrs each way). We're going down to South Carolina (10 hrs each way) in June and I think I'll rent a car again. It'll run me about $215 total for the week, and that keeps about 1500 miles off the box plus a worry-free vaction. Between last summer and this trip coming up, that's more than 3,000 miles that we kept off the xB. Plus it still looks 100% perfect with no rock chips.

You're kidding right? What are you saving it for? It's a frickin econobox... It's not a Ferrari! Drive the thing.. If you like it, enjoy it! Why would you not want to drive it... Maybe you are embarrassed to drive it.. or afraid it won't make it on a long trip... WHAT ARE YOU SAVING IT FOR!

This is hilarious

Use 3M blue painters tape. Cover the whole front end.
No bugs, no rockchips. :D

^^^ Damn, that smurf should go on a diet!

Tape works but for a more... uimmmmm... "presentable" look, you can throw the colgan carbon fiber (lookin') bra on it like me!

I have about 1700 miles on it and have had it up to about 80mph on a couple of occasions on the highway. Most of the 1700 miles thus far have been highway miles.

I took off the bra the other day and the nose looked as good as new

I think your response is hilarious. I know it's an econobox. I also know it will "make it" on a long trip. Before getting our two Scions, I drove a $32,000 truck loaded with all the options and my wife drove a full size Buick. Let's just say that we're used to a little more power and comfort while traveling. We happen to LOVE our Scions. That's the main reason for not taking it. That xB, whether it's inexpensive or not, is my wife's pride and joy. She likes the idea of not having to worry about rock chips, hail storms, or anything else while on a long trip. I'm not "saving it". She drives it every day.

No, that's the beauty of the 3M tape, no residue at all.

And we had a convoy of 4 xB's all with tape on them on a roadtrip and someone asked us if we were driving concept cars.

I've rented cars for driving trips for years and never thought twice about it. "Saving" the car is only a small part of the issue. The hassle of having to repair stone chips ( which the XB is a magnet for ) and door dings plus the front end stone chips is the larger issue.
" Enjoying it " is a little difficult when you are watching it get beat up.
I say rent it and enjoy a worry free vacation.

Or not.

How about http://www.duplicolor.com/products/shield.html instead?

I actually have a 3M clear bra now, but that's a good find.

I love taking the family on long road trips in the xB. I would never choose a rental over the xb.

We have the factory half mask on it and it seems to doa fine job. No major rock chips or anything.

I did the tape thingy when I used to drive the 1NZ back and forth from CA to TX. It worked effectively. That's a cool pic Jon!

You can cover the front of the car with vaseline to keep it from getting chips. I Have not tried it but i have seen it on a car before and i talked to the owner and he said it worked great. I always thought it was I lot of work but it couldn't take as long as tape and would probably work better. I'll just paint the Front end in a few years since I will still have a car i love andit will be paid off so I won't have a car payment.

as far as that comment about it being an econobox...yeah, the xB may not be a Ferrari, but since i can't afford a Ferrari, i'm getting something more in my price range. and regardless of what i pay for it, $5000 or $50000, even $200000, if i spend my hard-earned money on it, then i'm proud of it, and i want to do everything that i can to protect my investment. granted, it doesn't have some high-end name plastered on it, but that doesn't mean that i don't love it.
