I finally took out the plastic strips on my roof (only secured at the ends, I'm surprised they don't just blow off!) and the grooves underneath seem like a natural way to support a rack. I still need to look at a car with the headliner out to see if the grooves are part of roof stiffening structure. If that is the case, the rear of the rack could be invisibly secured by screws under the rear hatch. The front of the rack is still a problem and two holes would probably have to be drilled in the roof here.

How to carry a Windsurfer and Ski Rack on the xB?
I am seriously considering purchase of an xB, but I need to be sure that I can transport a windsurfer and skis (not at the same time!) The only available rack seems to be the removable Yakima rack system. I'm worried about the flimsy-looking mounting system, and wondering if it is sturdy enough to support a windsurfer. Also, I'm wondering if it will damage the roof of the xB, or cause leaks. I'd rather not have holes drilled in the roof, if that can be avoided. Has anyone had practical experience with the Yakima rack, or found any other way to carry a Windsurfer? Thanks!

Hey ... that's my ride!
BTW ... no longer just a bike rack but I have a Yakima basket rack also. This isn't the rack that attaches to the door frame, but a permintly attached support system (the racks themselves are removable, and are off most of the time). The supports are drilled outside of the grooves in the roof so that they clear the sunroof. They are fully siliconed and we have not had any leaks so far.
My wife and I surf, wakeboard, and snowboard as well as having the closest family 2.5 hrs away, so needed the extra carrying capacity. The rack supports the surfboards and wakeboards fine as well as about 100lbs in the rack (I didn't weigh it, but sounds right; 4 ppl's supplies for 4 days)

how much did that rack cost you? Im looking for the cheapest possible rack solution that will allow me to throw my surfboards on the roof of my xB for surfing trips. Im tired of using softracks because of the constant potential for disaster on long road trips.
