well hell if I know...
I believe that the thinner the oil the easier the motor revs... Ill stick with my 5-30, seeing as how it is what toyota suggests and there is no difference in price... My next big step will be going from the Castrol Syntec to Royal Purple... Im just not ready to pay $130 for an oil change

Toyota recently switched many of their cars over to 5w-20 for better fuel economy. The 1NZ was on their list of recommended applications, so I tried it out.

I wouldn't do 5w20 in my car, my gf's new civic calls for it, but I put 5w30 in hers only too. I looked into that pretty far and honda and ford use that to get better fuel economy since it is a thinner. They use it to increase the CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) reported to the Fed gov.
There are minimum average standards set so in order to meet or exceed those, and avoid paying penalties, they use 5w20. It gives you slightly better gas mileage, but more wear on the motor over time. But the difference could be within a margin of error and how the person drives personally.
I'm using mobil 1 5w30 with yzzf1 filter, no probs. Plus I got a sweet $10 rebate on 5 qts, and it was priced at $22 when i got it, so $12 for 5 qts. :D
Bird, on a side note I was going to ask, do you have any issues with water dripping on your amp fuse box under your hood?

Very interesting developments. I'll just do the 5w-30 mobile 1 syn.
sab, not really. Of course water drips on it because of it's location but I haven't had any problems because of it.

I went with royal purple syn instead. Walfart was out of mobil 1 and the nearest parts store only had royal purple, so I did it. Buddy said it's what he has used for a long while, so I trusted that. I've only driven it like 10 miles, but the engine is much quieter. No "power" improvements. Hopefully we didnt mess it up and it's all good.
