Default Buzzing/Rattling when at stop in drive?

Hi There......

Anyone else noticing a buzz type noise (that appears to come from the front of the car, but not in the cabin) when at a stop and in drive? I notice if I switch into neutral it stops. I've only noticed this in the past few days, when it got really cold here.

I have a 2005 xB, and love it. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this, and if it's anything I should worry about/take to dealer over, or if it's some standard, albeit weird, thing.

It's around 13,000 miles. It's auto, so clutch isn't an issue.

Trac control huh? I'll try shutting it off and see what happens...that is a curious thought.

What's a throwout bearting?

I have the same buzz in my auto 05 xA. It sounds like the grille or perhaps the fog lights.
You throw it in neutral and it goes away....

Hmmm , you still wont be able shut off your trac control as it is still working when you hit the button , read your owners manual on it . Throwout bearing is the center bearing or the cluth, which you dont have

Yeah since it got cold here I have noticed some querky things about the xB. Nothing major and since I seem to know exactly whats causing the sounds (the cold) Im not really concerned about it...

Yep.. the cold really shows how tinny the xB really is. Everything is rattling or buzzing... Its really annoying. Don't have these issues with my other cars when its cold.

My box does the same rattle, one day I got curious, so I put the car in drive, set the e-brake, and popped the hood to check it out, the whole motor shimmiys a lot, it seems like it is because of a low idle, and I discovered that my rattle is my AEM cold air intake..... try doing that (set the e-brake really good!!! it would also be a good idea to chock the wheels just to be sure) and get under the hood and see what might be bouncing around. Hope this helps!

Default rattle

I also have the same noise. It only seems to really show up in cooler weather. At a stop and in drive. It got really bad one time. Found the air filter cover not engaged in its slots next to the engine. I had just taken it in for service. It is a B.... because of the strut brace. The stock air box quivers a lot at idle, in gear on mine. And like yours, it stops when you shift to neutral or park. I don't have a fix for it yet, 12 hour swing shift and married with child doesn't leave much time.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I might check it out over the weekend, crack the hood and see what's up, that is if it warms up and isn't miserably cold. Otherwise, I'll just mention it when I get my next oil change. It's just good to know that it's not anything serious, it's just a cosmetic noise (weird use of terms, I know).

Default saggin exhaust

Sagging exhaust piping could cause the rattling, i had a similar problem. check the piping under your car, it might be resting on the 8" bracket/brace thats under your car... and when you start or accelerate, it will vibrate against it or make a "clunking" sound...

Default the Cold does bring out the noise

I agree. Since it has gotten a little cold here in Atlanta, my XB has suddently started making so much noise...inside and out. I hope it goes away soon, or I will have to find ways to stop it.

I have some noises also and the dealer can't or won't find them, last time in they said that the heat had a small dent in it but the noise is still there. Sounds like a metalic tinkle that goes away when the box is warm. It is starting to ____ me off with the lack of support from the dealer.

I have the same buzz / rattle noise only when the engine still cold, when the blue water light still shown.

only last for 30 secs or so when I first drive it in the morning.
but when the car stops, it's quiet.
I dont find it annoying, just warm it up good

I just bought a 2005 xB with about 25k miles on it and I notice the EXACT same thing.

A slight buzz coming from the engine when I stop at a light. When I shift to neutral it goes away.

Since the car is new to me I'm noticing everything.

The buzzing isn't majorly annoying I think I can live with, since it's so subtle.

It's been about upper 50s here near Chicago.

Oh forgot to mention, my car came with the dealer installed cold air intake (by AEM). I told the tech that I suspected that was causing the buzzing noise so they adjusted it slightly. They told me it was rubbing against something. But since I just got this car and then gave it back to them to make some adjustments I can't tell if it's better now. I think so but like I said, it's so subtle for me, it's not worth fussing over.

However don't get me started on the louder buzzing noise coming from the inside of the car near the dash when I accelerate, now THAT'S annoying.
