My R33 Skyline came with one from the factory mounted on the rear package tray. It actually worked pretty well but it also had a fan and a filter built in.

I've got one in my Camaro that I picked up from Autobacs before I left Japan, it's one of those little fanless ones that you plug into your cigarette lighter. In all honesty I have noticed no difference, if your going to get one get one of the larger ones that actually pumps air through it.

I had a cheapo ionizer and I used it only for about 30 seconds because it made a high pitched hiss/whine noise. Most ionizers generate a lot of ozone. You don't want a high concentration of ozone. Without a collector plate, it will make dirt stick to other surfaces (windows, dash) more.

I'd just do the home made air filter w/charcoal if you want fresher air. An unused dryer sheet under the seat does a lot to help get rid of smells too.

Here's a link for the "worthless" one I got in Japan, don't get one of these or anything like it

Doing a quick search online with what's available stateside I really couldn't find any Ionizers that I would recommend, nothing but cheap things you stick in your cigarette lighter. My factory one was hardwired in and bolted down and was controlled with a infrared remote that I clipped to my visor. Why the hell can't cars in the states come with stuff like this? ugh....

I'd just go with a homemade charcoal filter like stew32 recomended, I did the same thing to my xB and it works great. I also don't smoke (I'm a smoker)in any of my cars so that helps, a good cleaning(shampoo carpet, seats etc ) of your interior will help a lot with getting rid of the smoke smell

If you really want to get one, I'd actually recommend this...

You can shop around and probably get it cheaper on eBay, it's just the first link that came up in a Google search.

I had two in my apartment years ago and they work pretty good. Comes with car adapter. About the size of a Yellow Pages so you'd have to find space- under the seat or in the cargo area if the cord reaches. If it doesn't work out in the car, you can put it in your house.

Good find! that looks a hell of a lot like my factory one. It even comes with a 12V adapter.....might be picking one of those up.
