Default convo i had w/ a scion.com rep on warranty concerns

Please wait for a Scion Customer Advocate to respond. You are number 1 in queue.
You are now chatting with scion rep

jatt: hi how are you
scion rep: Hi, great thank you, how about you?
jatt: i had a question about scion suspension
jatt: im doing well, hoping to take delivery of my scion any day
scion rep: Which vehicle?
jatt: xB
scion rep: Sweet!
scion rep: go ahead please...
jatt: my question is what is the offset of the wheels
rupinder: im looking to upgrade to some 17s i had laying around from my previous car
scion rep: I apologize, I can only say that they are a 4 bolt pattern. Your dealership, which provides all technical assistance, would best be able to answer this question for you.
jatt: yeh apparently the people at teh dealership aren't so knowledgeable either
jatt: because it just got released here in februrary, i was surprised to the fact that i knew more about the vehicle than the person representing the scion
scion rep: Apologize about that. We also don't recommend modifying your vehicle w/ non-Scion genuine accessories since Scion has not tested these products. If it causes damage to your vehicle, your warranty may not cover this.
jatt: you say may not cover this
jatt: please explain
scion rep: Yes...
scion rep: Warranty only covers manufacturer caused conditions or defects in the workmanship of the material. Warranty does NOT cover damage due to external factors, including damage created by aftermarket accessories.
scion rep: This goes for any car manfacturer.
jatt: right i understand that, but will the warranty be voided if i were to put on some 17 inch wheels
scion rep: did that make sense?
jatt: without modifying any of the components
jatt: i upgraded to TRD springs, and TRD shocks from the dealer
scion rep: not automatically...if your axles were damaged as a result of installing these rims, then warranty would not cover...
scion rep: Nice!
scion rep: but the act of installing the aftermarket rims doesn't void your warranty automatically.
jatt: ok, also the same goes for if i were to install some interior lighting outside the dealer w/o modifying the harness itself
scion rep: exactly
jatt: and the addition of fog lights (since the car is prewired for fog lights)
jatt: i just cant justify paying the extremely high prices at the dealer
scion rep: You want to stay with Scion's interior lighting which has been tested and approved by Scion.
scion rep: I understand and know what you mean.
jatt: well its a dealer item
jatt: but id be installing myself
scion rep: If your purchased these items over the counter from the dealership and they are the approved Scion fog lights and interior lighting, then you are covered by a 12 mo/ 12k miles parts warranty.
jatt: ok, but what about if i go through an online retailer (TRDparts4u.com)
scion rep: TRD has their own warranty and will cover accordingly..
jatt: but will it void my basic warranty of the vehicle?
scion rep: No, as long as it's a TRD accessory.
jatt: but it doesnt matter where its purchased from?
jatt: whether online or dealer counter
scion rep: Let me check...one moment please...
jatt: ok
scion rep: I would check the retailer where you purchased the accy's from. The only TRD site I know of is www.trdusa.com. I don't think TRD parts4u.com or mrtoyotaparts.com is part of Toyota's offical network or retailers.
scion rep: *of retailers.
jatt: but as long as its a TRD accessory?
scion rep: I also don't know the condition or source of where they purchased their accessories from.
jatt: i understand if i dont get the warranty from TRDparts4u.com
jatt: but if its a TRD accessory provided by www.trdusa.com, my bottom line question is how does it effect my basic warranty or if it does
scion rep: to answer your most recent question, NO, it will not effect your basic warranty.
scion rep: TRDusa.com sells genuine Toyota Racing Development products and have a quality that is backed up by TRD.
jatt: ok. thank you for your explanation.
jatt: are you a scion representative?
scion rep: Yes, I am.
jatt: thank you very much for answering my questions
scion rep: No problem at all, Rupinder, thanks for your time and welcome to the Scion gang.
jatt: thank you
jatt: have a nice day
scion rep: Likewise!

so discuss please. also id like some other members from here to ask them some similar stuff see if their answers are consistant.

i also wanted to know whats the offset on the stock wheels. or what offset should i be looking to get if i were to upgrade to 17's

that stuff is'nt going to void your warranty. Ultimately, its up to the individual service department to determine if its covered or not. They would have to prove to you that something you did to the car caused the problem for it to not be covered. I really wouldnt worry about something like that unless you know the service department your planning on using has a history of problems like that. It wouldnt be a problem here

Depends on the width really. Barring spacers of course. Here's a list of sizes (in the 17 inch range) that will fit without problems:

17x7.0 . . . . . . . 28-42 . . . . . . . . . . 205/40-17
17x7.5 . . . . . . . 30-40 . . . . . . . . . . 215/40-17
17x8.5 . . . . . . . 16 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 215/40-17 . . . . Front doesn't rub, mentioned by Oper8r
17x9.0 . . . . . . . 17 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 215/40-17 . . . . Rear needs rolled fenders, mentioned by Oper8r

edit: center is offset...sorry forgot to mention.
