Default Did I buy a yugo?

I just bought a hot lava Xb, #1746. This is what my father had to say about my purchase:

Thomas:
You have just bought the latest version of the YUGO. I hope they have a dealer in Vegas as you will have alot of repairs on this car. I hope you have driven this car on the highway as the wind hitting the large windshield will put alot of pressure on the car and on a windy day this light car will be very hard to handle. This car will be worth about $5,000 in 3 years or less. I also believe you car insurance will be high in Vegas because it is small and very dangerous and if in a accident it will have very high cost damage. In other words I believe you made a very big mistake in buying
this car.

Not only that, but he's ignorant. We have dealerships (four I believe) opening here in June. It has been out in Japan for years, and any quirks were ironed out before the US market even got them. It is made by Toyota, which means reliability and high resale value. The safety ratings on it are very good, and insurance cost is not high.

This ain't the 50's PAPS...

Just go ahead and look up how car companies stack up nowadays, as far as reliability etc...

Noone on mother earth can tell you straight faced that an American Car company is more reliable than Toyota.

He is so wrong on many levels.
Since it appears he has never touched one let alone driven one, he cannot do anything but guess as to how it will handle.
Comparing to a Yugo? Yugo was a stand alone company. Compare it to a Saturn, then you have a fair comparison.
Value in 3 years is what the residual on a lease is after it is done. Then again How many 5 passsenger veicles thta get 30mpg for under 15k are there?

Lets get some points on here:
  • When the Yugo came out it was a new model, from a new company. Had many, many problems most of which could have been resolved with proper testing.
  • The xB (and xA) have a proven engine. It's been used in other models for years. It's just been re-packaged.
  • Speaking of said re-package, this particular model has been out for years. First as the bB in japan and then for a year in california as the xB. The kinks have been worked out.
  • Many, many, vehicles have a flat front end (vans, trucks, buses, etc). Wind problems come from the side, if you have a large, flat, side on a vehicle the wind will push it around easier. The xB is not only small, but low, thus it is easy to drive down the highway. Lastly (on this point) the shape of the car works to keep it going in a straight line, so it isn't out of control on the highway.
  • It's a damn Toyota, resale won't be a problem.
  • My insurance dropped, it's classified as a VAN not a car, by most insurance companies. They are a lot cheaper to insure then people think.
  • you're dad is speaking from ignorance and should have done his research. I have a feeling he talked to someone, who talked to someone, and got his opinions second hand. Read carefully, you'll notice, he has no facts to back up his claims.

Feel free to e-mail this to him, hell, he can call me (I'll e-mail him my cel number) if he feels the need. But he's wrong on this one. He really should go drive one, then find out about them, before he goes and tells his son that he screwed up.

[edit]
Oh, I was around when Yugos came out and have driven one (not mine thank god), so I'm talking from some experience when I compair the two, not out of my ___. I know enough about Yugos (even saw one of the few convertables up close) and xB's to know that they don't compair. It's like compairing a 1978 Pinto to a 1999 Escalade.

there are some foul blunt ***** on this forum. tell you the truth you can controll the car on a windy day at high speeds. it does encounter some turbulance from time to time that may be noticable but nothing dangerous. the insurance for this car is cheaper than most ( dual airbags, 1.5L engine, security optional, 5-door wagon) no problem finding good insurance rates. as for quality they may have left out or slacked on a few things but in the end your getting a awesome car with more extras that are standard than anyother car i have ever seen. not to mention that toyota has high resale and is voted among the highest in reliability. i will be respectful of my elders and ask your father to do some research b/f downing your very intelligent purchase.

no disrepect to your father but he is wrong, this the TOYOTA echo drivetrain, it is an entry level TOYOTA, just like Lexus is the high end, like the other have stated the yugo was plague with problems even before fiat sold the patent. Yes boys and girls the the yugo was a rebadge fiat strada, made in a communist block country. Most important if you like your car and enjoy it then why worry what other people think, your father included . Bill Turner

Does he know anything about cars??? Toyotas are the most reliable cars on the road! As far as wind goes, it handles as well as a Corolla or Civic does in high winds, and that's pretty good. I've driven them.

I would've never posted a topic like this...the flames are gonna be so bad you'll need a fire extinguisher dude. Your Dad is seriously deluded.

Besides, what kind of a Dad doesn't support his son and offer him affirmation and support? I hate to put it this way but, this says a lot about your Dad. You may wanna ask him why he would tear you down like that. I mean I know he's not disrepecting you, it's your car. But you obviously made an important investment in your life by getting this car. For him to tear it down like that? Borders on abuse.

ignorance is the word...

people are so dumb to jump into conclusion...how can one compare Scion with a Yugo?

Your dad must not know much about cars...

simple algebra ...
if Scion is Toyota, then Toyota must be Scion ...then which of the following is not true?

1) Toyota = Scion
2) Scion = Toyota
3) Scion = Yugo + Ignorance = Your dad drives Ford Taurus
4) none of the above

simple enough?

No, a Yugo was a Fiat built by Yugoslavians. An unreliable car even in the Italian version, but abysmal when built by the people who were probably Scott Adams' model for the Elbonians: "Sure we know how to write, someday we also hope to learn to read!"

A Scion is a Toyota and will be supported for the same amount of time as any other Toyota.

It should be about as reliable as an Echo or any other Toyota. It's hardly a new model.

Yes the wind will affect the Scion more than a 50's land yacht, but less than a VW bug. The windshield has little to do with it, though, it's the tall sides that will have an effect. Sounds like someone was snoozing in physics class!

Possibly, but resale value only matters if you are interested in reselling. I really doubt that any Toyota would depreciate that much in 3 years. Heck, Toyota might stop selling them in two years and make them collectable!

Well, our insurance in LA has been quite reasonable and I doubt if Vegas is higher.

Dad seems to be pulling a lot of info out of thin air! What did he want you to get, a Hummer?

George
