they will blow your coil packs found out the hard way.. just a word of advice

Unless you used some off brand OBX or ebay junk iridium. NGK & denso use the exact same resistor as the standard nickle tip plug "denso uses a slightly lower value resistor than NGK" I know personally of more than 12+++ xa's & xb's in our immediate area running both NGK and Denso iridium and have for years. Basically they are the same plugs electrically with different tips than the OEM nickle tips in the 1nz.

Now if you lost a coil pack, it was not from running iridium plugs unless you installed the totally wrong plug which even still, should not cause a coil pack to fail as they all run the same value resistors.

Questions I would love to know...
- How many coil packs did you kill, just 1??
- What type & brand of iridium plugs did you use / what part number?

Sorry in a previous life I was a spark plug specialists for race teams worldwide, I know plugs inside an out. What your are claiming is just totally strange. Anything is possible, but far from reasonable.

2 coil packs and yes they were obx and yeah mine were fine for about 7 months too but the guy is nice enough to cover it underwarranty even tho i swapped out the plugs

 

i am replacing them with copper ngks

 

sounds more to me like he wanted to put you on the offensive for whatever reason

then come across as mr nice guy for replacing your coil packs

no not like that at all.. i took the b n because it was driving horribly.. they said it was oil preassure sensor and i was supposed to have it back today.. then he calls me today to tell me my coilpacks are bad because of the plugs.. the guy is really nice he is over looking my mods and just doing the warranty work no questions asked

 

interesting he would blame your spark plugs...

kinda makes sence tho my first intuitions with the way it was driving was 1. maf sensore so i cleaned it no luck.. 2. coilpacks seemed like just wasnt firing correctly and all my plugs looked fine... then i thought it was like the cam positioning or something.. i was shocked when he said oil pressure sensor i was like what? idc no matter whati got the platinum warantty so as long as i have my free rental car they can just keep replacing stuff til they get it right..

Thanks, the OBX part cleared it right up No telling what value resistors they run. Also copper plugs are not copper, they are nickle tipped. 95%+++ of plugs use copper cores now, which is were the saying "copper" came from.

A standard NGK nickle tip "Copper plug to most" Will be fine, you will just have to replace them every 10-15K miles were you will get 80K+ miles or so out of a quality iridiium plug. So all in all the price for iridium is worth it in the long run. Also many other benifits, but we will not go into them all.

 

I've never heard of anything like that. I wonder what it is about the xB that made the coilpacks fail but the other vehicles (like TCs) that come factory with iridium plugs don't fail.

I can believe that the coil packs failed, but I've got a hard time reaching that the plugs did it.

 

sorry but iridium plug had nothing to do with anything, the only diff is the tip is a lifetime tip instead of 30k mile tip.

 

I am not a fan of iridium plugs, but I dont think they would casue the issues being described unless, like garage1217 said, are totally the wrong plugs for the application.

I know of at LEAST 10 boxes running NGK iridiums ( I only run the NGK coppers) and have never heard of any problems like the one you described.

yeah man. i'm running NGK iridiums for about 6 months now no problems at all. i'll have to agree with you and everyone else that it was the cheap OBX part with iffy/unknown reliability and build spec that was the problem ...

 

hmmmm I am only close to 75,000 miles on my Denso Iridium plugs....no worries

 

it depends if you redline ur b as much as he did lol nastos ftw!!

 

The only things that should kill the coil pac is way to big of a gap working it to hard a dead short or just a bad batch.
I have been running autolite cheap copper plugs for 40K+ miles without a issue.

The Prius uses the same base engine that's in the xA/xB Classic, with some changes - one of the changes is they use the NGK BKR5EIX-11 iridium plugs gapped at .044, and the part number for the Prius ignition coils is THE SAME as those in the xB Classic...
