Default DSM vs. xB

sorry...its not a race! hehe

I wasnt too sure where to post this so i put it in general...

here's my Dilema...

im really close to getting an xB...but i have to sell my DSM.
here's the deal...i need some help choosing..need some outside opinions...

Should I

A. keep my DSM

or

B. sell it and buy an xB.

now i've done the math and the difference between owning the two down a 6 month
period is like $4k.

pros of the DSM
POWER! that 4G63 engine is awesome...
sporty looks
front mount intercooler
i can burn stangs and camaros all day long
the BOV (how can you not love that!)
already has rims, sound system...the works
PAID OFF...no monthly car payment.
Cons of the DSM..
gas guzzler..
it's been out of commission for a while so to get it driving again is gonna
be like 1500!!! *new tires, tags, insurance, etc

the xB
pros
cheap insurance
4 doors
lots of space
cruiser
new car! no worries about engine gremlins
great gas mileage
unique looking car!
you can put 16" or 17" rims and you'll be fine!
toyota engine will last forever

cons
no power at all
not sporty (the eclipse is not a sports car either but its quick, im not
bashing the xb!!!)
i'll have a monthly car payment
did i mention no power?

I'm so spoiled with that turbo....but i'm torn...
i wish i could keep both but i can't
im inpatient....i want one or the other now!

any thoughts?
thanks all...this site is awesome btw!
great posts...its mostly why i want to get an xB!!

The ultimate choice will be yours, but will having a DSM give you the honor of having such a large and helpful family as you will have in owning an xb?
The Scion family is great and if you decide to join, welcome. And if you don't, glad you like the site.

All I can say is... power isn't everything, style is.

Also, with gas prices going up and up, how can you go wrong with an xB?? I just traded an '02 F-150 extended cab for my xB and I feel like I've got more room now than before. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the mpg is double what the F-150 was.

I'd dump the DSM in a heartbeat. It has lousy quality and is expensive to fix.
The DSM cars can't take the abuse of performance driving. Their resale value is horrible. Mitsu service is a joke at best.

That being said, the xB is no racer... so look elsewhere if you want performance. Buy the xB for what it is designed for. It is not slow, but it is no performance car. It does great for what it is... but don't buy it for something it is not

I just love pulling into a gas station behind a pick-up, van, minivan or SUV and filling the box up lickedy-split for around 20 bucks. Then drive away while they're still filling it up and up and up and spending 30,40,50+

I traded in my gas guzzling minivan (Kia Sedona, 16-20 mpg) and haven't looked back since.

I don't have DSM persay, but I do have a VR4 Gaylant(Made in Japan... way better quailty than DSM). So I guess I have the best of both worlds? Well, I had to buy the xB because my Gaylant is in storage in WA, so I needed something to get my by for awhile. Everyday I miss the turbo. The xB sucks. It doesn't have any space at all, it is not fast, it doesn't brake well, handling is ok, torque steer is ___, etc etc. I do like the awesome gas mileage. My Gaylant got me 18MPG or so on a good day. I also like how you can really customize a xB.
The insurance was cheaper on my Gaylant, but it isn't bad on the xB... but I'm 25 with no tickets or accidents ever.
I'm glad I have both cars. Super sleeper Gaylant for beating down V8s, xB for cruising.

DSM's are bound to have tons of tranny problems for the longrun. Since you are accustomed to such power i dont think the xB is for you.

wow! i didn't expect this much response! thanks!

yeah we have a family called DSM.org or DSMtuners.com
but its mostly posting about how to fix problems on the DSM's

true the Galant VR-4 is a kick ___ car too! like our early taste
of an EVO.

im actually not into the racing scene anymore...
all i want is some passing power. if some moron is going too slow i would
like to be able to go around him.

BUT...that being said my friend is telling me that my mentality will change once
i get the car. I'll be more relaxed and less in a hurry..

oh btw....the DSM is stick and i hate it in traffic...one of the reaons why i want an
xB Auto.

im pretty much doing it this way.
I have a potential buyer looking at the DSM tomorrow. if he takes it i'm getting the
xB! if not...then i'm saving up for a couple of months and getting the xB anyway!
i'll just have two cars...I need that xB to carry all my band stuff around!

THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT! you guys rock!

XB, xb, Xb, xB
pretty much why i'm convinced in getting an xB m(__)m

honestly man, think about what you want. Personally i see tons and tons and tons of DSM's where i live, i mean tons. Me and my friend have made up a word for these. most of the 'DSM's that we see are Eclipses, and most of them aren't really DSMs, just the RS and GS model, i think thats correct right? almost all of them are half-___ done up, i guess with all 'tuner cars' you have some half ___ ones, but it's amazing where i live how many of the eclipse's are N rigged. We call them Ecrypse's (i'm not sure on the spelling, never spelt it out before, basically a crypled eclipse). Anyhow dood, if u want the power keep the DSM, if you want style and an awesome community, go for the xB. IMO the xB seems like a winner in your situation, 1500 to get the DSM back up to par? get the xB, it's toyota, treat it right and it'll last forever

The Galant IS a DSM.... do you even know what DSM means? It means Diamond Star Motors.... meaning MITSUBUSHI the galant IS a mitsubishi, and hense is a DSM. back on topic, I absolutely Love my xB, however, the lack of power is absolutely killing me. I get 28 mpg around town, I don't know what you get with your DSM, but the difference in mileage can't compensate for the monthly payment you'll make on an xB... so don't buy one just for the mileage, as you will spend much more geting an xB than you'll spend keeping a "gas guzzler"

Ummmm dude your wrong here...DSM(Diamond Star Motors) was a joint venture that was co-owned by Mistubishi and Chrysler in a seperate DSM factory. The Galant was not one of the cars built there.

before you flame somebody get your facts straight. The Galant VR4 however did use the same drivetrain as the Eclipse GSX and AWD Talon, and Laser which weere DSM cars.

exactly my thoughts! i'll "save" in gas money but i'll have a car payment.
but on the one hand i'll be putting a decent down payment where my
payments per month would be $370 including my insurance.

i just hate the thought of getting crankwalk down the road and having to
buy a "new" engine (would have to be a 1g either rebuilt or straight out a donor)
and those on average have about 30-40k on em.

i'd rather put that 3500-4500 in getting that other engine and put that towards
a new car.

but right now im leaning towards the xB.
the Element is another alternative (has a little more passing power)
but its too big for my taste.
or the Mini Cooper S....just looks like a fun car to drive...but
not in auto...

xB is the winner among those 3! i can just supercharge it..
i've read posts here about the S/C and some seem to think its just
not worth putting 3500 for that mod. who knows...

and yeah the Galant isn't really a DSM..but they include it in the family.
it's got the same motor but its all jap. the engine and drivetrain are japanese
sourced but they built the eclipse in Detroit i believe. havent been on the DSM
sites in a while so all my facts are now blurs in my memory
