Default Empty Tank

Does anyone know how many more miles you can drive after the empty light goes on? I guess it'd be nice to know in case it does come up so you know how long you can hold out for gas.

Thanks.

Just filled up today almost as soon as the light came on (I figured why not, I was by a gas station and had money on me).... She filled up with about 9.8 gallons, and seeing as how it's an 11.9 gallon tank (and most people average at least 30+ mpg) I'd say you can easily drive 50 miles, but more than that and I'd watch out!

I don't know if you guys are getting the same results as me. But for my car . Every line on the gas gauge is a gallon. If i fill up at 1/2 a tank it take's 5 gallons. Usually a little under or over. Try it for yourself and see. Just my input

either you're getting 40mpg or something's up

I hit the E line and I fill it up with 9 gallons, I believe there's 10 or 11 lines total including E and F.

Anyway if I remember right you have 1.5 gallons left when the gas light comes on. Which runs you between 45-60 mpg.

It's not the greatest idea to let the tank run close to dry. It forces your car to use the sludgy gas at the bottom of the tank. Plus you run the risk of running out of gas, which is both a PITA and not great for a fuel-injected car.

In the xA manual that comes with the vehicle it has a warning to fill up the tank when it drops to 1/4 full. Scion doesn't want you to ever run out of gas cuz that can create some big problems.

i've never gotten better than 32MPG .. i consistantly got mid 30's around town in my corolla.. damn the short gearing!

but yeah, i usually take the mileage to 300 before filling up, no matter what the blinking light says. my gauge is off a hair anyway,.. never did get it perfectly aligned after removing it to do the lighting change..

Default Mileage Experiment

I was also surprised at 30 mpg highway on a trip I took when I first got the car. I experimented on week where I kept the highway speed under 60 mph at all costs. I also had some city driving on that tank and I kept it light on the pedal. I got 36 mpg. The next tank I drove at around 65 mph and the mileage dropped to 32. The car's 5th gear sucks! Obviously it's geared to optimize at 55 mph for EPA ratings but who drives at 55 anymore? Anyone know where to get a trans re-geared? An aftermarket 6 speed?
