Default Foglight Question (never asked before)

One future mod will be the installation of OEM foglights. I have the tech thread on do it yourself installation, I have a link to the $217 lights and I spoke to the inspector at a local garage. He says that Virginia requires that foglights work with the low beams and not with the high beams. I understand that. He also says that if there is no bulb or socket in the lights, it is considered an ornament. And he will not be checking every switch on the dash to see what it does.
My question: After you install the foglights, can you cover them with the body colored covers for inspection? Will the covers fit over the lights? I want them to be powered by the parking lights so the chime will work if I leave them on. Let me hear from those who have the OEM foglights. And thanks.

you'd have to modify the panels...you may be able to make it work. why not take it to a different garage for inspection where they're not so strict?

I will go first the dealer who sold me the XBOX, they will do it for free. I may fail because the red 'stop light' taillights do not have DOT stamped on them so I may need to swap the stock ones back in for a day. hTXb, do you have OEM foglights? Will the cover fit back over them? How so modify? Shorten the holder oners?

yeah, i have the oem foglights, but i haven't rewired them the way you're talking about so i don't have to worry about it.

as far as the cover goes...not too sure, man. it would have to be rigged, though...that's for sure. i'll see if i can find the covers and take a look.

Just pull the relay for the fogs before you go to get inspected. Tails should'nt have to say DOT. The main thing is to have red reflectors on the rear of the vehicle. As long as the tails light up red that should be it.
Sounds like VA is too **** over crap like this. The cars they should be inspecting are the exempt ones, the hoopties that smoke and have a single tail light and headlight. LMAO

I told the inspector that the tails DO have the needed reflector. He said that he would look for the DOT dispite the fact that they comply. I will try, if it fails, the tails are not hard to swap out (thanks to the DIY info). Pull the relay, does that mean unplug the switch?

You could do that too or just unplug the lights so they don't work for inspection seeing how they are not required equipment.
DOT... Thats funny

Default ....SOLUTION.......

I was working in the LAB late one night, and the moon and the stars were shining bright,.... I saw my fog light covers on the workbench.

They were up for sale, but no one wanted them, so I sized one up to see what kind of saw I would need to modify these covers to fit over the installed fog lights. I sized it up and scoped it out. I found that the plastic backing could easily be cut with a box cutter.

After sizing and scoping some more, I began to whittle away at the back of the fog light cover. I noticed that there is a gap above the fog light and below the housing, about 1/4 inch. I removed 3 of the 4 clips that hold the cover on. I reduced the thickness of the clip by shaving the backside of the clip and I cut off most of the 'barb' that holds it in place.

I found that the fog light holds the one clip in place and will not fall off. It seats into the exactly correct place with a distinctive 'CLICK" and does not come out without an effert.

"CLICK"

So here is how to mount your covers over your fogs. Why would anyone want to cover perfectly legal working fog lights? I wanted to adapt these covers to hide my fogs on inspection day but I am legal so I don't need to hide anything. I noticed that the front of my car has so much bling

that I missed seeing more of the body color on the face. With the covers in place, you see more of the color of the car. If you are going out for only an afternoon, covers might be an enjoyable change of face. Now you have the choise. This is a sweet install in my opinion. And it qualifies as a genuine modificiation, so I am posting it up.

I dreged up this year old thread to answer my own question:
Yes, the fog light covers can be modified to fit over the fog lights.
1. Cut away three of the four mounting clips, keep the top center-most clip. See above photos. Shave the back side of the fog light cover until it seats securely over the fog light.
2. Do not cut too much off, and DO NOT CUT YOURSELF either.
3. Remove and replace at will as I do. I hope that at least one person (besides myself) will perform this modificiation. Did I mention that this is another 'almost free' mod? These covers are the ultimate daytime rock blocker for the fogs.

I don't see where you mention what brand tail lights you have. My TYC's came with a DOT certificate.

Default Yellow.....

Back then, a year ago, I was rocking these tails:

No DOT/SAE stamp on them. I now rock the TYC's and they are great and legal.
It seems that I must learn the hard way.

Seems like a cool enough mod. I don't think anyone has ever thought about doing that. They either had fogs or not.
