Well, actually you probably did get over 40. If your odo is like most with factory tires, it underreads milage by about 4%. So, add about 16 miles to that total and you will be over 40!!!

I've been told that for years. I must be just lucky so far. Someone thought because I drive 6-7 miles after any fill-up I might be burning enough out of the neck to prevent an issue

How do you know that?
it has been tested by several member who were not happy getting lower than the sticker MPG...
they would go on long trips and watch the mile markers on the side of the road....
say you start at mm 4...write down the odo milage
travel to mm104. that is 100 miles traveled on the road
now check the odo milage again...it will be around 95-96 miles

My light came on just as I pulled in my garage last night, so I'll fill up about two miles from my home this morning. Should be interesting.

There was a topic about what happend to one guy that did that. It ended up contaminating his charcoal filter system and not being covered under warranty cause it was his fault (big can o worms). It ends up going into the vent system and causing all the problems. I just fill it to it clicks then round up the price a few cents just to be safe.

I guess this all could be true. Just rounding off to the next quarter or so will not cut it for me. Wonder how many do the same? There's no way to get an accurate mpg reading this way. Plus, I'd literally have to fill up daily. For now, I'll chance that the distance from the station to where I park is enough to keep the codes away

I'll be out of warrenty in a few months anyway

By way of follow up....day before yesterday, as I pulled into my garage, the fuel light came on. Next morning, hopped in and starter her up, no light, but needle near E. Drove about two miles to fuel station. Filler 'er up and ... bingo. The pump shut off right at 9.9 gallons. I was able to squeeze just a bit more in for a total of 10.171 gallons. The comments here have been spot on in terms of capacity.
