What kind of gas mileage are you getting? Any mods?...So far my stock 5spd B eturned 31.5 mpg on its 3rd tank of gas.

 

Performance wise: aem cai/hotchkis strut/borla exhaust. Bigger rims (18's) also effects gas milage...I've come to the conclusion 29 city, 32 highway....auto xb.

 

I don't pay any attn to city mileage as it can vary so much depending on where I go...but I went from Lake Havasu to Phx and did 80 (4krpm) pretty much the entire way=27mpg.

Tank 1 yielded 30.5 mpg
Tank 2 yielded 32.x mpg

That's it so far

 

I've had my xB since Oct. I now have over 12K on it. I average 33 to 34mpg on a 55 mile drive to work. I'm filling the tank when I hit 300 miles.

Ive never seen anything better than 26-27 mpg. I have no engine mods yet either. Camelback Scion technician says that is normal. Bulls**t I think.

 

I don't know who's feeding you that line, but that's horsesh_t. I have no mods and stock wheels and from day one I've been getting an average 33mpg. I do drive all freeway, but at 75 to 80mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you drive? Auto or manual? Do you shift under 3k, or above 3k? (average shift) Also, any extra weight from a day to day basis?

I usually shift in the 3-4K range, but I'm still "breaking in" the car. Even still, I'm hitting 30+ in the city. Make a conscious effort to drive with less lead in your foot and see if that helps. It's the only thing I can think of that would cause poor mpg in a new car.

 

There seems to be somewhat of a pattern... those reporting poor gas mileage in the other thread have 04 xBs. But are silent about any mods they made to theirs.

I've had my 05 xB since Jan 3. I'm averaging 32 city, 34 highway (but that has been with a heavy load from IKEA and driving up the mountainous Rt 17 to Prescott).

Manual transmission, everything stock, factory alloy wheels, shift points between 3k - 4k..

 

I drive average, I dont race the engine because its new and all. I have a 05 xb manual, has 3200 miles on it now, had 1st oil change last week. I have been recording the mileage since I bought it and between the gas pump and the odometer and tripmeter, the mileage has always been the same. (26.7 26.9, 26.7 seems to be the concistent number). I just now added 17's with 205/40/17 tires (same diameter as stock) Ill check the mileage after this tank full, no engine mods yet, just suspension and paint.
Im just going to have to bring it to the dealer and have them figure it out.

 

I have discovered if you shift in and out alot above 3krpm, your gas milage is going to go down a little more. As long as you keep it a little lower than 3krpm or right at 3krpm, you should be okay. It also depends on if you floor it to get to 3k, a lot comes in play. You know, how much traffic is typically on the roads (traffic jams), more up hill driving, and the list goes on. Good luck!

05 xB, auto, no mods, 215 17's; I drive 22 miles one way to work, about 11 miles on Bell Rd from Surprise to 101 North, so it's stop/go around 40-45 mph, then about 11 on 101 North to I-17/Happy Valley. I consistently get 32 mpg. Twice there has been construction causing my work commute to be 1/3 longer and my mpg during those two times was 1/4 less - 24 mpg. Same amount of miles driven, but much of it spent idling or creeping in traffic. If I drive from Surprise to IKEA/Tempe - 303 & freeway all the way - I get 37 mpg.

It is all in how you drive it. I have one employee driving an 05 xB autyomatic getting 31. This is around town and the local freeways, he drives it gentle. Another 05 xB with the 5 speed has been getting 34.2 but the last tank was 34.3. He said he shifts as soon as he can. I got 25 to 27 on the same 5 speed and I have been doing about the same on the next one. All three have AEM cold air installed.

 

If concerned, the dealership can hook it up to a tool and will do a cruise test and check the mileage. This is supposed to be pretty accurate. I don't know about toyota, but most dealerships actually don't do anything though unless its quite far off from the norm. But there couuuld be something wrong... All the 05 SRT owners for example actually recently found that their poor fuel economy compared to 04's wasn't them, but an issue with the fuel mapping. Doh! They have a recall to flash theirs now. It is quite normal to get below the EPA estimates though (all cars do).

 

We just hit 2,000 miles on our '05 auto xB, no customization, and have been getting 22-23 MPG on mostly inner surburban/city driving. Lots of traffic lights, but we are virtually never stuck in traffic jams. And even when there are stetches of interstate driving included, mileage, which we have checked on about half our fill-ups, has been pretty consistent. So I guess we should be following Ducman69's advice.

Should the cruise test be included under the warranty? And what could reasonably be causing the problem?

Its not only how you drive, its where you drive.
(my dog just jumped into my lap and is trying to type for me)
In California, the air quality control laws really mess with the fuel we get. I would hypothosize that Calif people get lower mpg overall then other states.
I average 28.5 mpg. During the winter, I was averaging 23.5 mpg. I took my box to two different toyotal dealers. They both shrugged and said winter fuel is really bad and don't expect to get the mileage quoted on the side of the car.
