Default Fuse size question

I bought my 05 xB new with a cruise control installed by the dealer. The independent Southern dealers could do that and it was warranted through the South Eastern dealer network. Got a Borla exhaust and cold air intake as options too.
Sometimes when I plug a cell charger or MP3 player into the cigarette lighter plug it will blow the fuse, sometimes not. I learned early on that the dealer changed this fuse to a 20 amp from I think a stock 10 amp. I learned that the cruise is wired to this circuit.

So here is the question. Please don’t speculate as fire and sparks are a bad thing. Can I safely change that fuse to a 25 amp or maybe 30? It is a real pain when I plug something in and it blows the fuse. Shutting radio and or cruise has no effect nor does the order of connection. My droid X charger will blow it with nothing connected and my GPS never does! Anyone know if I can safely do this?

That sucks...I dont think it should be taped into anything else there should be a install guide some were on here that can confirm, and if it was it should not have been changed to a different ampage as your other stuff can only run on 10 you now just doubled it and can damage the other stuff that should only be on a 10 fuse. From what i understand is the wire can get really hot and blow anything that is under 20.Found this for you not sure what brand you have but maybe it will help

Chargers that you put into the cigarette lighter plug are creating the short. The fuse rating is not the problem- it's the kind of chargers you are using.

no you do not want to put in a higher fuse, if you do it might not blow but can still short out and cause some of your wires to overheat a melt(not cheap to fix). it sounds like you might have a bad connection inside the ciger lighter, or bad charger. i would make sure theres nothing in the lighter take a can of compressed air(for computers) and blow out anything inside of it. if you still have problems afterwards i would check your droid charger in another car and see if it has the same problems blowing the fuse, cause your charger could be shorting out. Those cable ends were it plugs into the phone dont take much to get messed up and cause shorting issues.

As per my original post, it is not only the phone charger and it doesn't happen every time. All these chagers work fine in my Dodge 3500. In short, the issue is not related to a failure of the chargers. I expect some just take more juice.

You need to have an electrical guru trace what's running on that fuse circuit, and isolate the problem. Definitely do not put a higher amp fuse in the circuit, as it could start a fire and destroy your car when the circuit overheats.

The way the chargers are built is usually the problem. The metal part on their end can touch power and ground terminals of the cigarette plug. 99% of the blown lighter fuses i see are because of that. The other 1% is a coin inside the plug. Don't install larger fuse.

Default Thought so

I figured everyone would say don't install a larger fuse. I was hoping maybe someone had already done the electrical math on what the wiring on that circuit could handle, and maybe it could take a 30 amp. This situation is a real pain but not worth cooking the electrics for.

I agree that it is the device plugs. It makes perfect sense because some plugs blow the fuse and some don't. Even the ones that do will sometimes work fine.
