Default Gas Mileage Experiment

I know, LOTS of posts about this subject
I had to make a round trip drive this AM of about 100 miles so I decided to see just how high I could get the fuel mileage up to. I filled up and that tank yielded an every day avg of around 30 or a little less. Lots of a/c lately here in FL!! Made the trip and I just filled up again. 117 miles and 3.05 gallons gave 38.36. I never exceeded 75 mph (only for 10 miles) and the majority was at 60 or less. I figure even if I underfilled bya little bit the mileage is still at least 36mpg. This was still using the a/c but I did consciously go easy on the gas pedal.
I really think that those who are complaining about low mileage numbers are probably putting their foot down a lot, especially if they have some performance mods.

The best I've gotten so far is 29.8mpg, and I was trying hard. My dad hasn't done better than this in his xB. I think there are four things against us. Our cars are new, with less than 4000 miles. San Diego is hilly (is it flat where you drive in FL?). I think I've read that the refomulated gas used in CA, especially in the summer, results in lower mpg. Our trips are generally under 10 miles one-way.

Yeah, I think your circumstances are killing you. My mileage really hasn't changed much, if any, because of any additional miles for break in. And yes, it is very flat here in central FL. I miss San Diego Spent 27 years in the Navy and was in and out of there a lot.

The other day i checked my mileage (which i dont do often because i drive so much) and i actually averaged a little more than 32 mpg. Which isnt bad considering i use the A/C almost all the time, average well over 80 on the expressway, and I like to accelerate quickly when leaving a stop light.

I just went 375 miles on my very first tank of gas! It came out to 38 mpg!!! All city driving though, no highway driving last week. The car only has 400 miles on it now, so it may change once it's broken it.

I just took a trip from Vegas to LA and noticed the same as the first poster, even with 18's and an automatic staying below 75 althe way to LA and running around the cerritos area got 34 mpg not figuring the oversize tires. On the way back 85+ all the way 27.45. Big difference. Bill

I was complaining about my mileage earlier on another post(29-32MPG from Boston to Louisiana), but this last roadtrip (Louisiana to Cali) we got around 34-36 MPG. Not bad considering the hills and such. I kept it under 70 the whole way though and I beleive this is the key to good mileage.

yeah, i complained about the gas milage, but since then it has gotten better for some reason. i actually added bigger wheels too. my buddy didnt start getting good gas milage till about 3500 miles and this is almost the same spot i started getting better gas milage as well. i went to biloxi the other weekend and we were getting 32mpg on the highway. not bad considering i was getting about 24-26 about 2000 miles previous.

Yea I think i found my problem of 22-24 mpg and that is that i drive maybe 10 miles total a day and its very hilly where I am at. So I gonna wait till I take a long drive before I lose it and call the dealer.
