Sounds more like the wiring got damaged.
With radio shack gone, it's a bit harder to find good soldering components so you can do a splice in with new wire. Ace hardware may have the stuff you need. I did see decent wire there the last time I was in. Wasn't looking for soldering guns or solder though.
The wires are much thinner on the newer cars so those old style splicing clips will not really work. Soldering is really the only way to fix wiring damage and have it last a reasonable amount of time. Crimping connectors doesn't really last long at all.
