Default HELP!!! Big time squeeling sounds under the hood

Has anyone experienced a very high pitched squeel from your engine? I have an 05 xb and alot of times when I'm idling at a stop light, it just starts squeeling all of a sudden and really really loud for that matter. Sometimes when I'm on park, it also does this. I took it to the dealer and they said if I get my throttle body cleaned out, it will help it out. I really think it's the belts (I had them replaced but still does it). Any ideas on what I can do to fix this issue? It is extremely embarrassing driving a clean box and suddenly squeeling really loud. This isn't how I wanted to get heads turning at my ride.

throttle body my but. wow how could that make that noise.
is your car auto or 5 speed. if its a 5 speed could be your throw out bearing in your clutch system.

it's auto, not 5-speed. About the throttle body, i figured the same thing. wanted to charge me $130-$150 just to clean it out and only to "hope" for the noise to go away.

sounds to me like a belt..i had a car that had a squealing belt one time and i had to change it twice and get it really tight on there before it stopped....i would suggest finding a good local mechanic that could do it for you if you dont think its something you can do. i dont see how it could be the throttle body, i think they also make something you can rub on the belts to make them stop squealing but i would try to get it tightened first....it was my alternator belt that always gave me trouble.

Old trick. start your car, pop the hood and spray a little wd-40 on th belts one at a time. When the squealing stops that the belt you have to replace.

even if your belt was replaced, your pullys can have residue from your old belt slipping, which is preventing the needed friction between your new belts and pullys, causing your new belts to squeal as well. a little scotch bright on your pullys before the new belt goes on will do wonders.

My belts squeal bad in wet weather, before the car warms up. It sounds worse outside the car than inside, so it falls into my favorite category of problems: everyone else's.

i have had the same problem, go to crank up the car and belts are squeeling to high heaven. I just recently took the x-box to the dealer where after waiting 3 1/2 hours they came and told me they think it's my belts. After another hour and a half I drove off annoyed but happy the belts had been replaced. Two days later get in the box and crank it up and the thing is screaming like a banshee, worsethan it was before. I took it back and after waiting another hour they finally told me that the belts were loose and tightened them for free. Got a free oil change and tire rotation out of them but still I am generally unsatisfied with the service at the dealer. Of course around base you kind of get used to eing screwed over by the dealerships

An old trick I learned from running a radiator shop is use a bar of hand soap. While it's running apply the bar to the surfaces of the belts that contact the pulleys. It should eliminate the squealing. If it does return grab a can of belt dressing and use accordingly.
WD40 will work temporarily but will evaporate.

I am on my 3rd belt, as the original started to squeeeeeel around 30K miles. The new belt lasted 3 months. The 3rd belt was an OEM Scoin belt and that last for another 3 months. I retightened the belt since and it now behaves.

Retighten the main belt. Get it as tight as you can and it should quiet down. If not, then you may need to replace or re-tighten your power steering pump belt. Its definatley not your throttle body, thats just as stupid as stupid can get.

haha. thanks for the advise. i did take it to the dealer and they tightened the belts and it works great now. all i have issues with now is just a little vibrating noise which i cant tell where it's coming from. i know this time its not the belt but it's somewhere between my dash and the engine...is there any kind of dampers that i can find to resolve this issue?

There is actually a TSB for misc. rattles in and behind the dash. Most here just fixed them themselves.

2 months after the dealership did the belt TSB my water pump went out, at first i didnt know what it was , but it was making a rattling noise kinda like a heat shield rattle. I noticed when i gave it gas ( in or out of gear ) the noise sped up. At certain times it sounded like a rotor being cleaned up, for me it was the water pump.

The description you gave sounds exactly what my 04 xb is going through right now. It makes a rattling noise which sounds like its coming from the belts area. The noise seems to be getting louder with time. My xb has 108k, never changed the belts yet. I'm almost positive this is the issue. Toyota is charging me $102 for the water pump and $49 for both belts. I'm going to go on a limb here and replace these.

You got real lucky. Belts are only meant to last like 60k or so.
