Default How do you do it?

ok...first some background info...I just bought my box 2 weeks ago ...there enough background info. To this point I have set-up the "hook up the box account" at the bank. In the past week I've saved a whopping 150.00 dollars . My first mod is going to be to change out the rims. Ok now to my main question...

...How do you do it? There are many mods much cheaper than rims that I can buy. So I ask you, do you stick with your goal and save up to what you want to do first? How do you do it?...or...Do you impulse buy and blow the savings on anything you want besides your main goal? If you do this why?

reason for the question is simple...I have a hole in my pocket and I'm itching to start spending money now but I want rims so I'm trying to hold out.

I would blow the $150 you have saved on some springs. This will make the box look better now, and will make the box look a hell of a lot better when you get your wheels. You can do what I did and pick up some Megan Racing springs on eBay for about $70 (you will not be disappointed). This way you still have $80, hoping that you can install them on your own. Otherwise forget about the $80. Once you've done that I would check out wheelfire.com. They have tons of package deals for wheels and tires, plus they offer free shipping. Of course don't impulse buy!! You don't want to blow money on things that you aren't going to want later. Make sure it's what you really want. I did that with an armrest and now I'm out $100, plus the cost of having to buy another one.

Springs are good... rear sway bar is good.

Nice rims on a box without a drop looks kinda funny.

I drove the box around for 6 months trying to save for rims. I was working at wal-mart and just making my car payment was rough at times. lol. But rims is what I wanted most and I saved until I had enough for the ones I wanted plus springs. That way I had the look I wanted in one shot. Like everyone else said its your money but make sure thats what you want. Do some research before you buy.

I have the hubs... Never had hubs on any of my cars before this one. I am going to lower my box when I get the rims, it's just that I keep looking for stuff that I want to do to the box...I guess I'm a lil obsessed at the moment. I was going to go in this order...rims/lowering kit, body kit: Noblesse, headlights, tails, then go into either performance/mpg mods or audio.

If you want a cheap and stylish alternative, keep your stock wheels and put trim rings on them with some center caps and chrome lugs. Or instead of the center cap and chrome lugs, I got the the center cap from an old 1980's Tercel and it fits over that space perfectly (thanks to Alan for the idea). It cost me about 30 bucks for 4 trim rings and about 40 bucks for the tercel caps (shipped from a guy on scionlife... You could easily find them cheaper in a junk yard) If you go with the center cap and chrome lugs I can't imagine it would be more than 50 or 60 all together.

Just another option.

EDIT: Here is the link to the thread that I first saw the idea from: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ght=trim+rings

Personally, I would set some goals and work towards them. For example, if you want wheels and springs, I would figure up the costs for them and work towards that total cost. Like I said, that's my opinion.

Right now I am trying to save up for some rims also. I ended up buying springs and some cold cathodes so now it will be a little longer on the rims but I am definitly glad I bought what I did. It will all come in time but I know it's hard trying to save for something when there are so many things out there you want. Maybe to satisfy the need to mod and still save up for the rims you could do a bunch of free/cheap mods, there are a lot of them. I still think lowering it should be one of the first things done to the box though.

If you're ichin' to do SOMETHING to your car, do the "free" mods.

Debadge
Remove rear wiper
bB front badge (cheap)
Clear headlights
Spend a few hours waxing
LED cup holder mod ($5)

Stuff like that...

I would save up money for the big items to make sure you get exactly what you want.

Anyone got a link to a thread that shows all the free mods and the how-to's? I tried searching for it but came back with a lot of results, but not what i was lookin for? If it doesn't exist I think someone should start one.

Do the more of the performance mods first. You'll get tired of doing things that make your car look better. Plus what's the point of having something look good when it doesn't go FAST?

We are all obsessed. I almost don't have a girlfriend anymore because all I am able to talk to her about is what I've done to my box, and what I'm going to do to my box. All she really cares about is what I am going to do to HER box!!! HA HA

This is what I suggest: performance, audio, and then appearance. Make it really fast so you can race for money and get the appearance and audio stuff quicker.

Im really surpirsed at those who all too often spend top dollar for aftermarket when we have access to the biggest Scion based site. Keep an eye out in the classifieds, it will pay off. Here are some things i have bought from other Scion owners who just grew tired of what they had ...

Borla axle back .. used .. $100 installed.
4 tv headrests ( stock ) ... used ... $400
17" wheels with 215/45 rubber, less then 1K miles .. used ... $400 plus a spring install. I sold my old wheels for $300, so i paid $100 for a new set of wheels ( lug nuts, HC rings .. the works ).
OEM front grill ... used ... $30 with emblem
One-off Celica GT hood .. $100
One off WRX front bumper $400 ( originally sold for $1,000 in a previous sale ).
Sony Stereo w/ 2 12" explodes in box ... used .. $50 plus a set of Tein H Techs ( i think i paid $100 for new ).

I have seen on various forums ..

Goldline springs ... $80
TYC tails ... $100
OTG rear shims .. $40
cleared headlights .. $20
strut bars ... $10
CF hoods ... $100
body kits ... $200

the list goes on and on ... just keep an eye out for it. Deals are out there, you just have to keep an eye out.

FAST???? xb=fun to drive neat lookin, but never fast? just to make it quick he would spend way more than rims springs or ne thing else you can conder up to make it look good. bag it and sit perty on some 18s and still be ridin when the turbo xb takes a dump.good luck with the mods.
