How I got "GOOD" MPG in my xB
So I drove from Fountain Hills, AZ and on a FULL tank of gas averaging around 70mph on the I10-W. I filled up at the Morongo Casion. I had gone 303 miles and was just between the last 2 bars before the reserve light went on. So I filled up but could have gone longer, but from being unsure about the remaining distance I could go, I decided to fill up and be safe.
I filled up a total of 4.576 gallons. SOOO 11-4.576=6.424 gallons used to go from Arizona to the casion in Cali. Then by dividing the total miles traveled- 303 on the 6.424 gallons used- that means I averaged 47.16687422 MPG!!!!! HAHAH so guys, go 70 in a 75 zone and you can get the mileage I got.
So this is what I did- No A/C on, windows up most of the time..but an occasional 'windows down sesh' to cool off from what became a steam box on wheels. Do I think the windows down thing made a difference in my MPG- no not really.
But for you guys going on a trip, find that spot in the RPMs like I did just under 3K rpm's wher it cruises nicely at 65-70mph and just let all the cars go around you, after a while you get used to it...but in a few hours you'll get giggles cuz they will be passing you again as they had to stop and fill up and you're still kickin it in the toaster on that same tank of gas! Enjoy, experiment and rock on guys

#1: This is not right. Not possible.
#2: The gas tank is 11.9 gallons, not 11
#3: If your light came on and you only put in 4.576 gallons, you did not fill your tank. It should take about 9 once your light comes on.

And your math works out, but your filling of the tank is off. Seriously. Putting 4.7 gallons in at < 1/4 tank is way off. Think about it. YOur tank is the better part of 12 gallons. 3/4 of that is 9 gallons.

The way I believe MPG should be calculated is: dividing the miles traveled (303) by the gal. to fill the tank up, (4.576), you are actually getting 66 MPG. When my light comes on, I normally have a 9-10 gal fill-up. I don't think 47 MPG is possible, unless you are doing some serious drafting right behind a big rig (perhaps). And 66 MPG may be accomplished if you are traveling down a grade, and drafting, Seems too good to be true.

I don't know about the rest of you - but that's not at all how I measure the mileage in my vehicles.
If you fill up 10 gallons on 100 miles since your last filup - that's 10 mpg.
So you're "4.576" gallons filled up since last fillup for the 303 miles you did yields: 66.216 mpg
Not that I don't believe you....but if you got all the way to the "last 2 bars before the reserve light"....you'd be filling up more likely 7 - 9 gallons....not 4.576. So assuming your gas guage was right and you got let's say 9 gallons filled up and NOT 4.576.....you got an amazing 33.6 mpg.
I'm not saying you're lying or anything.

you got better gas mileage than you thought
You're not giving yourself enough credit Bossman.
You only put 4.576 gallons in. That means that you went 303 miles on 4.576 gallons, for
66.2 miles per gallon.
That's truly amazing.
Unless there is some other explanation...

11.9-4.576= 7.324 gallons used. So that means 303 miles traveled over the 7.324 gallons used would equate- 303miles divided by 7.324= 41.370835561
- Now would you like me to round off at a total MPG of 41? or how would you like it to be read? So I was off by 5.8 mpg average
So NOW THE EQUATION STANDS AT 41.3 MPG....is that more satisfactory. ____ dont college students make mistakes or is everyone on here an accountant with their windsor knotted tie tied a wee bit too tight to let the 'common human error' thought into all your minds? lol

trust me you didnt get 41 mpg either.
you'd have to be drafting downhill almost the entire time , as well as not completely filled up. these scions ave fuel filler neck problems not allowing you to fill the tank if you let it stop at the first click , some gas stations really exaggerate that effect as well.

This has been posted before BUT--the only way to measure MPG is to fill up totally and then reset your trip meter. When you fill up again (repeat FILL) you measure the amount of gas you pumped against the trip meter. The best I got was 37 MPG driving at 65 with no AC on the open road.
