I about wet myself: Most rediculous bill for your xb!
So I'm overseas (I posted a little blurb about my wife's 1st Gen xB a bit ago...and I think she's actually on here now) but I just got the bill for her 30,000 Mile check-up...damn I hate this exchange rate, how much is it normally? I paid £150.88, which is probably the going rate...in England. So if anyone keeps up with the exchange rate they'd realize I just paid $298.65 for a 30,000 mile check-up! You just gotta love that exchange rate!

That prolly isn't far off from what the full treatment would be over here without shopping around. There was a thread where someone paid near $500 for the same thing. Dealers get away with it cause people pay it.

damn dude, your wife is cheating on you, she got royally f'ed by that dealership.
30,000 mile check up, seriously, all it should be is oil, tire rotation, air filter replacement, spark plugs, and a bunch of visual inspections.
should be like 15 for the oil change, 20 for the tire rotation, and i'm not really sure, like say 5 bucks a spark plug, and some minor labor. shouldn't cost damn near $300 dollars.
your scion comes with a maitenance guide, read it, lots of good stuff in there about what you need to do at every service interval. knowledge is power, and in this cases, saves you a few c-notes.

Heres the link to the 30k tune up thread:

Kinda related, I had a 1998 Montero Sport. 36k tune up needed the timing belt also. Just over $3000!!
I saved the 3K and used it to trade up to a 80 series Land Cruiser. Screw that nonsense! Timing chain FTW! One of the 3 best vehicles I have owned so far. The box is in there too!

i had my brake pads replaced and the discs resurfaced. i assumed this was routine work and would not be a lot of money..... so they did the work and THEN they told me the price....
$330!
now i only go to the dealer for oil changes ( cheap, close to me so i dont wana bother doing it myself) but all other work will be done by a local mechanic
hard lesson learned.

According to the service guide there is a whole bunch of stuff for checks, flushes, etc. For most people these things are something they don't want to deal with so they pay the dealer and they will go back if there are any problems-they want value for what they pay for. They are also the people that will argue why their brake pads are not covered under warranty even though it is a normal wearing part-but then they pay it anyway.
The problem is these people also do not know their car. They don't know if the brake pads were really worn out and turning a rotor means nothing to them.
I just checked my pads a few days ago-when they wear out I will do it myself (just like I have on all my vehicles) but I will upgrade at the same time to some ebc pads.
Same goes for spark plugs, tires, clutch-etc.
For someone who just drives their car and either has no way, time or reason to work on it themselves it's a convenience-like paying $5 for fast crappy food at a drive through instead of getting the stuff, going home, cooking it up and eating healthy nachos or a real burger for lunch.

^^Yep.
Also, if you want to see what prices for each checkup are just check the dealership's website. All routine maintainence items are Pure Priced just like all Scion Accessories.
You will know what each service costs going in.

The best thing about DIY is its like getting free tools with the labor charges you save. Then later when you have all the free tools and free knoledge the money you save goes right back into mods!!! Win win win DIY FTW!!!
