Default Interesting problem with my temperature dial. Looking for answers

Hello and thanks for reading.
I just recently purchased a 2004 xB and have a few things on it to work on. One issue is I dont really have any heat or AC. The AC "sort of" works and as far as the heat goes i get nothin. One thing I notice is that on the temperature dial when I turn it all the way to the cold side, or the hot side it will retract a bit. In otherwords, if i turn it to all the way cold and let go of the dial, it doesnt stay there. Same with the hot.

I pulled the dials off and the two screws so that I can remove the dash to have a look. I turned the dial to see if there was anything obvious but i dont really know what im looking for.

I also removed the glove box, replaced the cabin filter, and saw the cable for the temp dial, but couldnt see what would need replacing or repaired.

I thought that maybe there is a flap stuck or the cable needs replaced? If anyone has experienced this issue im looking for help. Again, thanks for taking the time to read.

cheers

The temperature control is usually connected to a cable that moves flaps and or valves. I have not delved into that part of the xB, so cannot give you specific directions.

Looks like you will be having a fun explore - just go easy with any of the plastic snap together covers and bits as the plastic is getting old and brittle.
Shame the manual has gone.

You may be able to pick up a few clues here

just click on the image to enlarge
and here

Other than that, you may just have to search Youtube to see if someone has been into the heater control area

are you aware of a flap that directs cold and hot air?

There is a rod that operates a flap of some kind in the fan / filter unit behind the glove box. Here's a link to the page that shows it on photobucket (or as I call it now - advert central)

This is as close as I've got to the area you are having trouble with.
Just take pictures as you explore so you can refer to them on re-assembly
Sometimes you can put screw sets etc in ziplock bags to help keep things in order

Almost sounds like a previous owner may have just messed up the temp blend when doing a heater core replacement.
Maybe the cable popped out of it's mount? Sounds like it may be something simple though, just think if it had stupid automatic climate control. Good luck and worse case take it to the dealer and let them figure it out.
