Default ipod (mini, 3rd or 4th gen) and scion xb

ok, so i've done a lot of searching on this forum and others to connect my ipod to my scion stock (single cd/mp3 player) for a clean sound. after trying this or that, found there are really three options:

1) wired fm modulator (wireles is totally out of the question) about 30-40 bucks
2) aux for scion stock (i.e. TOY03-AUX) about 70-80 bucks
3) ipod interface for scion stock (i.e. Neo or ipod2car or dension) about 190-200 bucks

option 1 and 2, will result in rca to mini headphone jack to plug into the ipod, but then you have to figure out what to do with power. but, option 3 has power built in, and all you have to do is plug the bottom dock connector and it charges, powers and plays through the stock radio AND you can control your ipod through the stock cd controls. ironically, option 3 is the easiest install. you have to get to the back of your radio on all of these options, but because option one requires power for the fm mod and ipod and option 2 requires power for the ipod, option 3 only has to connect one wire harness and it's all powered for the interface and the ipod. i guess that's where the money goes.

so, decided to get the Neo from mp3yourcar.com cause this one (and i believe the ipod2car) doesn't lock your ipod down and you can access the controls from the ipod as well as the stock radio. should get it today and gonna install tomorrow ... i'll definitely let you know how the install goes and possibly take some pics (not as much as that camry nav install - props!).

so, here's my question. anyone got this far and have this type of connection? where did you install the ipod? i don't want to keep it in my glove compartment, cause i wanna be able to see the ipod. was thinking about routing the wire in the "oven" (compartment below the a/c controls) and just pulling out the ipod when i want to see it and keeping it in there when i leave the car. but, i'm thinking about getting a ipod mini dock and putting that in my cup holder and install the wire from the interface to the dock. so that i can just pop in the ipod and take it out and slide it in the oven. i got some ideas from tunertricks but just trying to find the BEST place for it. need some creativity here! thoughts?

I can't wait to see a writeup on the install. Please take pictures and notes!

I am really wanting to do the same to mine. I saw an xB once with the iPod mounted in the cup thing above the glove box, looked pretty good. Not sure who's it was, but it was someone around here.

I thought the whole problem was because the stock HU didn't have RCA jacks?!

I've heard the Neo works well, but you need to get an adapter kit to fit it to the aux output on the HU.

yeah, i saw that too ... but, when i kinda held the ipod, it was too far and also the center console kinda blocks the view too.

hopefully will be sat or sunday for the writeup.

The Neo does power your ipod, and it needs Toyota harness #08695-00370. I posted a question about this about a month or so ago and got a ton of responses, one in particular who uses the Neo with his stock 6 disc changer and loves it.

right, i did mention that it does power your ipod, right? i ordered the toyota harness w/the neo at mp3yourcar.com. they say they get a LOT of scion calls. but, yeah, dibujob, thanks for reminding to tell people about the harness!

and you are right, the stock HU doesn't have an aux out w/rca's. that's why i said option two is to buy the AUX out cable.

Shoot, I didn't know there were options. about 6 months ago I just had my stock unit ripped out and had a front aux input AWIA installed. Works good.

I put my ipod adapter (wired fm modulator jack) through the front bucket over the glove box. iPod just plops in. Plastic is easy to cut. I cut an "X" shape and fed the wire through leaving enough slack to hold iPod comfortably

it says that it has an audio aux input. so, all you need is some rca cables, and you're ready to go!

So does that mean there is like a spot in the back of the headunit that I'd just have to plug rca cables into then run them straight to the Ipod? sorry...im not too familar with this stuff...thanx for the help.

usually, there is a female rcas (left/right) in the back of the headunit and so, you'll have to just plug in the rca (left/right) to headphone jack that you just plug straight to the ipod. you'll get a pretty clean sound.
