I just rolled over 5k on my box... been averaging about 27mpg since I got it. Usually fill it up with 87 or 89 depending on what is available. More people should get on the fueleconomy.gov tracker... that's how I log my mpg data.

Also, and this only started after rolling over 5k, but my maint required light flashes on startup now. It stops after a few flashes though. Is this their way of reminding me to have scheduled maintenance done? wtf

It needs to be reset. It's covered in your owners manual.

Usually an OIL CHANGE reminder - if you had it done by the dealer they forgot to reset it for you.

It's simple - have odometer showing (not the trips) turn ignition off - press and hold odometer button in and turn on ignition - release button when the little bars all light up - turn off ignition - done.

So . . . .

I finish my last tank of gas and still 25mpg around town. So I decide for the heck of it i'll try 89 octane. 28mpg on the same daily route, driving the exact same way. 3mpg gain . . . Starting to make me wonder if the 87 Octane at the Chevron station I always use is actually lower octane than it's supposed to be.

I only have 2200 miles on my car, but I have averaged between 29.5 and 30.5mpg on every tank so far. 80% of my drive is HWY/INT, though. It's only going to go up from here on out!

I am hard pressed to get better than 30 MPG, but I do.....I drive about 50 miles each way to work everyday on interstate...you do much less than 80 and you'll be ran over.

But for in-town driving, I found some site that recommeded FLOORING it....so I do that up to about 3K RPM......seems to help

NOPE you don't want to be flooring it - these engines use variable valve timing and about 1/4 throttle is best - any more and it starts getting inefficient at those low RPMs.

Yes, the engine boggs at low rpm and wot. It's shooting large amounts of fuel but cannot make the most of it till the rpm come up higher. That raw fuel ends up going out the exhaust and gets wasted. Just try to keep the revs above 1.5k and below 3k and you will get good mpg.

If the octane is below 87, the ECU will be unable to prevent knocking and you will know it. Your Owners Manual, Section 2, Page 114 says:
OCTANE RATING
Select Octane Rating 87... or higher.
Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating or research octane number lower than (87 octane) stated above will cause persistent heavy knocking. If it is severe, this will lead to engine damage.

If the octane is above 87, there is no difference in performance, as Scion has stated:

It certainly won't make any more power in our engines. But for whatever reason my MPG went up with the 89 octane.

I think i'll use 89 octane from now on. $1 extra per tank and I gain an extra 30 miles per tank. So i'll be saving $1.19 per tank overall (at current gas prices)

Could be the higher octane has some better cleaners in it or a little less ethanol - you should try the 87 again with a little STP gas treatment added to it and see if it helps the mileage.

Biggest thing to help gas mileage is to back off the gas SOONER before you stop. I am doing several 1 mile trips with cold starts now and accelerate for 300 feet and coast for 1000 feet or more and am averaging about 32mpg with 4 stops in that mile of traveling. Current Tank Average is about 38MPG now but should get back up once I start some longer trips around Christmas.

Man do I wish I could do that, unfortunately here in Miami, everyone has those Big h2s, and unofrtunately they have lead feet. so even when I do coast, they almost hit me 95% of the time

"For whatever reason" does not include the gas; more likely the right foot, traffic, number of cold starts, etc.
Since it won't make more power on higher octane, then it won't make more MPG. More power = less throttle for same speed - less gas = more mpg.
I used 93 octane for the first 5,000 miles. It sure felt great to think for only $2 more per tank, I was getting more more power and better mpg. But then I got that email from Scion recommending 87 for best economy and saying there was no extra power from 93 octane. So I alternated between tanks of 87 and 93 on a 2500-mile trip and there was no difference in mpg or power. The placebo effect is strong on 93 octane.

I don't know about your driving but i'm very consistent. I drive the same route the same way everyday (ok, consistent and boring). It's been the same temp here (give or take a few degrees) for the past 2 months. 87 octane on my same route/same driving style=24-25mpg. 89 octane=28mpg.

Granted that is a single tank at 28mpg. I'm going to burn up my 2nd tank of 89, then switch back to 87 for a tank as a control.

Also, my ride has about 2500 miles on it so maybe it somehow hit it's final breakin about the same time i put in the last tank.

I average 30 mpg using 87, and I've been doing about 70% hilly city driving.

I consistently get 30-32 MPG in the winter in Ohio and about 34-36 during the summer...and this has been from the get go. I wouldn't say I drive hard, but then again I don't granny it either. I drive mix city and highway and either use BP or Shell regular.

I was getting even better mileage, until I install a CAI. Then my mileage dropped about 1-2 MPG.

I get about 33-35 fairly consistantly. I do mostly interstate driving at 70-80mph. I have the aem intake and borla exhaust, which in combination seemed to make the difference. Fully stock I was at about 30-32 on interstate. I am a southern boy, so no hills around me, mostly flat driving. When I went a little further north on some hills, I got around 30 on interstate.
