This looks bad. See how there was damage to the cabin? That means you'll most likely break your legs. .

but, also look at how the integrity of the passenger compartment was not compromised in the head-on collision. i can't see any buckling, appears the doors could still open after the crash.

This was an offset front collision. the car was hitting a barrier that was only on the right side of the car. This is truly a worst-case situation.

Scions are tiny, short vehicles. You can only have so much crush space in the front end in a vehicle like this. If you make the entire structure rigid so the front does not crush, you will kill the occupants with the deceleleration.

I don't know if it makes any difference but those are the older models of bB in Japan. The newer versions, along with the US Scion xB have been outfitted with longer protruding bumpers (testiment to the fact that barely any JDM body kits will fit on USDM xB's). I also read somewhere that the sides were reinforced more than the previous JDM model for US shores.

If any xB owners expect the xB to be a strong american-built like car... get a life. Wat u expect from a car that's designed like a box and has limited front end?

I hope that I never see such accident with any xB...but if it happens...hopefully the airbags and the crush zone will save us. I know for a fact that our xB is not made to be strong like a SUV, but i considering the size of the vehicle...i think it stood well in the crash test...

i don't understand wat u're talking about...the cabin damage? i see only the airbag deployed and slight misalignment of the front door...the integrity of the cabin is well intact.

Most importantly...just wear ur seatbelt...that'll save anyone's life.

I recognize the photos -- those are from the Japanese crash tests.

Here's the link (in English):

http://www.nasva.go.jp/assess/html2002e/as115.html

Our little shoebox did pretty well -- 5/6 stars for the driver, 6/6 for the passenger.

Courtesy of Google:

1 Newtons = 0.224808943 pounds force

Should help convert the femur loading, etc. from the Japanese crash tests.

In all seriousness I wonder if Japan uses different size crash-test dummies than NHTSA, IIHS, etc. as that could affect the results.

I'm pretty impressed with the overall crash test rating for the xB ...

eventhough the cosmetic damage looks awful..the occupants injury protection is pretty good...that's good to know.

Ugh...

I shudder just thinking about people starting to post their accident photos of their Xbs and Xas.

Try being belong to WRX and CIvic Si forums. Tons of "Wosrt Case Scenario" accidents with those crowds.

Please everyone! Drive safe. Xa and Xb are not designed to handle well under accident...

Strange, the xA (Toyota ist) actually did better in many ways:

http://www.nasva.go.jp/assess/html2003e/09.html

But the version tested had the 1.3L engine that comes on the base model ist and bB in Japan (OT: Yes, we DID get the upgraded engine).

Agreed that your crash results may vary. Just for comparison here are some other JDM tests ...

Nissan Cube:

Now you know why they're not being imported. Do have a look at the video: http://www.nasva.go.jp/assess/dload01/o_move/o_cube.mov

Honda Odyssey:

Subaru Forester:

Honda Accord:

Corolla:

Impreza wagon (with 1.5L engine, this ain't no WRX):

I E-mailed the NHSTA asking them when they were planning a crash test of the xB – no word yet.

i agree sithscripter

all you have to do is look at the crash test videos for similar vehicles and you will see that the bB is among the best in surviving the crashes.....

at least that is how it looked to me.....

Yeah, I think it held up pretty well. The numbers showed one leg of the driver's side dummy came close to the limit, so do have some milk with those Krispy Kremes! :D If anything I'm more worried about being rear-ended at high speed as there's not much of a crumple zone to protect the back-seat passengers.
