Default The little chip in the windshield that could.

Heard a loud thwack against the windshield on the freeway. No big vehicles around. Light traffic. This is my first experience with serious windshield damage, so I was surprised to find that the impact crater was so small. Initial crack was just a vertical line a few inches tall. Later that day it lengthened, and then took an L-shaped turn and finally "thinned out" and stopped. Can't really feel anything from the inside or outside of the windshield except for the chip.

Getting a replacement very soon. Seeing that the impact point was at the very bottom of the windshield, I'm thinking that $70 hood visor would have gone a long way. arg. I'll probably order the clear one.

That sucks. How long did it take for it to grow?

Also which hood visor are you talking about?

After the first vertical crack appeared, I parked the car. 10-20 minutes later I went back and saw that it lengthened and took that horizontal turn.

My bad, I meant to call it a bug deflector/shield. I'm looking to get the one shown mentioned in a few threads like this one:

sorry to hear about the crack shan14.. sucks that the xB is so prone to rocks, especially around the bay area ...

woowoo, do you have a link to the autozone one? $56 shipped seems like a good price to pay instead of $100 for each windshield going through my insurance..

There was this thread just a couple days old about windshield problems with our cars and the legal action that one took...

Those front of the hood deflectors are not gonna stop anything except damage to the front of the hood. Nothing will help with the windshield unless you could do a strip of clear 3M stuff along the bottom and top. Then only the inbetween area would be at risk.

I was picturing more of two poles mounted on the front bumper cover with a piece if window screen stretched between them to wart off the rocks. Or a second dummy windshield mounted just infront of the real one for a decoy.

I could care less what you waste your money on and how dumb it will look with it mounted to the hood.
If you are going for the grampa in a K car look you may have found it.
Guess it's nice we live in a free world.

They will only deflect stones that hit them. If a stone was to hit the deflector, it might be deflected up over the windshield. But the deflector only sticks up an inch above the hood, which is not much windshield protection.
The real purpose of those deflectors is to protect the edge of the hood and to blow bugs over the windshield. The air stream off the deflector will tend to deflect light bugs upward and over the windshield at high speed, but stones are too heavy for their path to be affected by such air.

I'm a Jerk so what do I know?
