Lost our xB tonight
The pics will be coming soon, but here is the story. The wife and I were over at my parents about to watch the UFC fight. At about 9:45 we hear some screeching and a boom. My wife and mother are upstairs and I hear my mom yell "YOUR CAR!!!" I go running outside to see a Nissan Stanza sticking out of the rear of the xB. The guy got out of his car right as I got up to it. He was blatantly drunk. He starts making all sorts of excuses and I have to keep my father from beating his ___, but man did this guy deserve it. I kept an unusally calm head and kept the peace as well as had the cops called and all the other fun stuff. A couple other people drive up to our house and state that he had actually hit a few cars and they were chasing him.
Finally the first cop shows up after 2 or 3 min, pretty quick for a non-life threatening call. When the first cop asks what happens my father points to the accident and says "This _______ hit our cars". The cop looks at the guy and goes "Is this your car?". And the next part actually had me laughing. He was telling my father stuff like "I got a phone call and looked down" "I made the U-turn a little wide" "It is too dark infront of your house and I didn't see the car". When the cop asks what happened he says "I blacked out", the cop asked why did you pass out, "I had way too much to drink!"
I had to laugh, cause if I didn't I was going to kill the guy. He actually hit the rear of the car so hard that he knocked out the drivers side spring! It is under the front part of my car right now! *sigh*
The good news is no one was around to get hurt, because a lot of people walk their dogs past our house, and no one was in any of the cars except the drunk. It was a BCP, so now we get to wait till insurance takes care of all of it and get another xB. I just bought Rims, Koni shocks all around, and Tein Stech springs. Time to pick up another one and put them on it.

Sorry for your loss. You restrained yourself very well. I don't know if I would do the same. Glad to hear you are looking forward to another xB. Stay with the Box, and enjoy your brand new one.
That sucks man. I've had a few friends have that happen to them. Some weren't as lucky because the person who hit their car drove off. Did he have insurance? Thats always the worst when they don't and everything comes out of your pocket. Sucky way to get a new one. At least you can reuse your old parts.
You showed remarkable restraint, and seem to possess a Zen-like calm. Very impressive.
I hope you get this settled quickly and to your complete satisfaction.
As for the drunk, it's a sad commentary that he's probably already driving again, and will not have his license revoked unless he has a long and egregious record. In my opinion there's no moral difference between drunk driving and randomly shooting guns at pedestrians. Cars are deadly weapons, and people who demonstrate that they can't handle them should not be allowed to have them.

Good question...
I know that we're all on a budget and one "good" way to save money is to get the cheapest insurance we can...
But there are two things to think about, a couple of things we can do to protect our investments in the future and make sure something bad like this doesn't turn into a Catastrophy...
1. A lot of Scion Owners, I'm saying this because I'm assuming most are young and earn limited wages, put the minum down payment on their new Car, this is fine, except, lets say, your new baby costs $17,000 with tax and licence etc, right? OK, you put $1000 down...which means you owe $16000...some idiot wrecks your car, you owe $16000 and your insurance company offers your book value of say, $13,000...so you still owe your finance company $3000.00!!
For a few Dollars more, you can get "Gap insurance" this makes it easier to drive a brand new replacement...
2. Coverage for "Uninsured motorist" is also available, doesn't cost much, call your Insurance Agent...
I know it's very expensive for Young Peeps to get insured, that's because Insurance Companies work on stats, and statistically speaking, it's pretty much guaranteed that, lets say, an 18 year old WILL DEFFINATELY have some kind of claim at some time..that's why, sure, there are Companies who offer "Cheap Insurance"..and you'll see whay when you make a claim, they can take up to a month to even LOOK at your damaged Car, then they'll do whatever they can to get out of paying...
Farmers, Mercury, Met Life etc are more expensive for instance, but after my Car was hit my met-life adjuster came out to my work the next Day, took a picture, asked a few questions and gave me a check the very next Day!! (I don't work for an insurance company btw)....
As you can see, the poor Guy was in his House, not even driving the Car and WHAM!! So you can't even rely on the fact that you might be a good driver...
Sorry if I sound like your Dad...just something to think about...

We don't know if he has insurance at this point. The police put him in cuffs and took him away but gave us a report number that we gave to our insurance to get everything taken care of. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, but we can always go through our insurance if worse comes to worse.
xB27, yeah we have been talking about it but the KBB is much higher than what we currently owe, so we should be fine either way. I will keep this updated with any news!
rdclark: I mentioned that last night he will probably be back on the road again. It ____es me off and we need some hardcore DUI rules.
I still hope the guy got "initiated" in his cell last night!

I really hope everything works out for you, it's a real shame....
The part about the insurance wasn't really aimed at you, I just thought I'd mention it because it could help someone else in the future...
The same thing happened to my Wife one night, brand new Car, a week old, parked outside the House and a bloke skidded in the Ice..totalled her car and drove off...they never found him...
At least hopefully your Guy will be having "Fun" sobering up in Jail with some 350Lb Hells Angel....heheh.

Whoa, sorry for your loss and I do hope things work out for you. My company requires me to carry maximum insurance on our cars. It's not cheap, I get reimbursed and these incidences remind me to be glad I have it.
I hope this case goes to trial, may be the best way to be better compensated and for him to loose his license.

We got some good news, he is insured and we are going through his company. They tried to act like he wasn't necessarily at fault, but then we cited the DUI and accident number and they changed their tone.

If this had happend in CA and the Guy was DUI his insurance would not have to pay for HIS Car...here DUI = Void insurance...
Good luck!!
the insurance business is a racket. but i is how the game is played. the GAP insurance makes a lot of sense. it is very sad about the car. the main thing is that no one was hurt. if it had have been my scion i would have been ____ed. i am reminded what the great lawyer clarence darrow once said: "I've never killed a man. But I have read a grat number of obituaries with pleasure."
Sorry for your loss, Glad noone was on the street when it happened. Glad also to hear his insurance was SOOO understanding right off the bat. They always try to point fingers at the victim in an accident, probably a rule they learn in claims class. RULE #4:NEVER claim responsibility when obviously our insured is at fault, ALWAYS blame the victim.
There is nothing worse than someone crashing into a parked car.
It happened to me a few years back, when I had a ford ranger. I got out of the car and started walking into a shopping center when I heard this big crash. I turned around and see this oldsmobile-literally up inside the bed of the truck!!! Out of the window climbs this weird kid!! He climbs down from the wreckage, and starts screaming "oooh muthaf***a!!! Oooh muthaf***a!!" and starts jumping all around!! I said, "Yeah, Motherf***er is right!! That's my damn car, ***hole!!!"
Along come these 2 women and they start screaming the same thing too!! Pretty soon they're all standing there jumping up and down and making weird noises. It was like they had turned into some kind of monkeys or something!! No derogatory crap here...sereiously-They were even doing a "ooh ooh ah ah ah!!" sound!!! I was angry at first, but at that point I was too freaked out by what I was seeing. Some guy even took a picture of them. Not the cars, but them!!
When the police came, even they were kind of freaked out, I think. Turns out this big fat lady didn't want to park and walk, so she had her 13 year old son let her out at the door and go park the car. The kid claimed he mistook the gas for the brake, but the cops said he was probably joyriding in the lot, since he was doing about 40 when he hit the truck.
I had just had the car detailed the day before, and was all happy with my shiny pos.
Idiots are everywhere. Just remember that its a car, and be thankful that noone was hurt- even the stupid ones.
