Default New engine =Horrible MPG HELP!!!!

hey guys i need some help i have a 2005 xb, I recently blew 2 rods and had the motor repalced with a used, not rebuilt engine with 31k on it after i picked it up the guy told me he had to put a new fuel rail on it dont know why but he did anyway, before i blew my engine I was getting about 28-32 mpg or about 290-300 a tank now that i have the new one im gettin like 20mpg 210 miles a tank.
the only mods i have are, Cai, headers, turbo cat back exhaust. i dunno if it has anything to do with the fuel rail or not. Also after i got it back i put some NGK plugs in and it fouled out #4 cylinder 2days laters I have a scan gage and it isn't throwing any codes!! i've tried seafoam and it hasn't help at all. i appreciate any help!!

1st thing I'd do is run a compression check, then look at the head to see if you can spot cracks around the valve guides/or the head it's self. oil is seaping into the compression chamber from somewhere, either thru the head, a broken ring(s), cracked piston,or one of the emission controls have took a dump on ya .. good luck and let us know whats what pls.

oh snap...
have some one run an exhaust/emissions test on it.. that new fuel rail just may be way out of whack.. or worst case he didn't install/ calibrate it correctly ..

Its not smoking at all it it runs great besides the fact that it stutters a lil bit when i get on but only for a few seconds, how would i check to see if the fuel rail was installed right? i just filled up today i got 170 miles out of a tank!!!!

I guess first thing is, how many parts from your blown motor were swapped onto the used motor, (i.e. coils, intake, throttle body, etc.)? If the used engine needed a new fuel rail, why wasn't it taken from the old engine? How to check if the fuel rail is installed properly, simple, it is leaking gas anywhere? if yes, then its not installed properly, if no then it is. When you fix that intermittent stutter, you will see the gas mileage return.

Found the problem one of the fuel injectors were leaking, took off the fuel rail and readjusted everything, no leaks so hopefully that fixes my problem thanks for all the help!

WTH didn't they just transfer over all your original parts? You should still have your injectors, TB, intake and header.
I'm also curious what happened to your first engine. They are bullit proof and should last 300 K or more if treated right.

I noticed that too. xBs get great MPGs. If they don't they have issues.

HA! I was told the same thing about my motor being bullet-proof... but the dealership said mine must have been built 2nd shift on a Friday... See my post...
