Default New keys

Mrs. Scion picked up her plates and registration from the dealer today. She went into parts to get a spare key, thinking it would be a few dollars.

She was pretty surprised when they told her it was $18. There's no RFID chip in the key, so why is it so expensive?

Thats what they charge for the key with the Scion logo in it. They should have the same key without the logo for at least half the price. I know the key I got for customer cost me about $2 with my discount

I can get the logo keys for $7

That's a pretty expensive logo!

Even the part dept. was surprised. She managed to bargain a much lower price (basically, she said take the key back, or give it to her at a reasonable price), and they're going to take it up with the Scion manager. We would NOT have bought the logo key with that much of a premium, esp. since its for a spare!

Yeah sorry. We dont set the prices as Scion Managers for things like that. Its all Scion. I would only get the logo cause I can get it way cheaper than the crazy full price...

99 Honda Civic, key from dealer was about 5 bucks, maybe.

Keys with the molded rubber end at the big box hardware stores are 5 bucks or less.

Unless there is an RFID chip to deal with, $18 for a key with a molded rubber end is really out of line.

That's becuase they're German. everything's overengineered to the point of stupidity. Replacement keys on my Boxster (peice of crap) were a few bills each and so was a spare SRT-10 key (which is got a lot of MercBenz crap in it as far as electronics go).

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that anly manufacturer branded key that is made will cost a bit more than your generic black head tipped key.

I don't know about you but 18 bucks is very cheap. When I purchased my Celica back in 02 and was trying to get another Toyota Branded spare key, they were charging me about 45 bucks, so I just went to another keyplace and got those cheap generic unbranded keys and had a spare made.

You're lucky the xB doesn't need a transponder, having a spare transponder key (with RF radio signal ignition chip) is going to cost easily over 100 bucks, basically around 200 something

I'm well aware of the expense of the RFID keys (I have those in the Maxima)

My wife's major complaint about the cost of the key was that they just made the logo key without asking, telling her the price, or telling her the alternatives.

i had brought my car in once because my key was stuck in the ignition. when i picked it up a few days later with a new ignition switch, there was a spare key (plain, no logo, no rubber) sitting in the cup holder..

that's a different story. i was thinking she wanted the logo key and they said $18. i was thinking $18 sounds about right, but i didn't know the circumstances behind the complaint.

...let's get this str8 , your wife went in to parts and said :
" I would like another key made for my Scion ."
...and you think the parts person should have said :
" Mrs.Scion , that key w/ logo is $ 18.00 , but you can get one without for $---- or you can go to Lowe's or Wal-Mart and get it for $---- ."
...some say ; " if you have to ask , you can't afford it " , but I always ask b4 I buy anything .
...all that aside , a logo blank is under $5 bucks and they should have cut it for free .
... logo key blank + labor = $18.00
