New XB: Engine Whistle
Had the car a week, and we love it. But I've tracked down an engine whistle just above 1500rpms. It's the engine, not the transmission. I know from nothing about cars. Is this something that will go away as it breaks in, or is already time for a trip to the dealer? Thanks.

It might be the timing chain. The timing chain will whistle. I notice this when my foot is already on the accelerator then I let go of the accelerator then i immediately hear the whistle. Sounds cool, IMO :D
Both are normal, the tapping is the fuel injectors. The whine, who the hell knows... it sounds kind of cool ;)
I think the tapping it the valve acutally, but a noisy valvetrain doesn't always mean trouble. Different types make different noises depending on how valves are actuated.
The whine is the timing chain, if you're talking about what I think you are. Chains are a little noisy but I will take one over a belt anyday. I was psyched when I heard these have a chain. Belts break. When a T-belt breaks in a high compression engine like this you're in some deep ish. You think your valves are noisy now, imagine what they'd sound like crashing into the top of the pistons at 94985970893 miles an hour
Luckily, unlike the othe 90% of the cars on the road we never have to worry about that rare but catrostrophic event. We also don't get the biggest regular maintance buttraping there is with any car--- replacing the timing belt.
Our Scion's will be on their third or fourth owners and we'll be driving hydrogen fuel cell powered plastic cars that go 0-60 in 30 seconds by the time that chain needs replacing.

I dragged the dealer's mechanic for a ride to point out that whistle. I hate it, it drives me nuts. He told me that it was because the xB has a timing chain not a belt and that the chain would do that. I particularly dislike the rumble and grumble sound it makes if you just lightly tap on the gas while in a parking lot. Grrrrrr. But I'll take a chain over a belt anyday.

Chains will stretch, but rarely will they break like a belt. I've seen lots of belts break, but very, very, rarely have I ever seen a chain break. I sell car parts. lots of belts, few chains.
