Default Ok,... MPG question.

For gas MPG,... what are the speeds per gear? I know in my 4cyl. Tacoma i sI go above 70mph in 5th gear,... the MPG drastically drops, I mean it flat out waistes gas. When doing 70 - 75mph in 5th gear, what is the rpm at that speed? Thanks.

4000!!! Are you serious!!! Damn. So I wonder what the MPG would be if I was to do most of my driving at 70 - 75mph? What does the car redline at?

Wow,... my taco does 80 at 3000 but then again it redlines at 5500. Does it sound like it's racing to stay up at 70 - 75? I know some cars, the engines are whaling to keep up. Thats where MPG goes to shhhhh. You know?

You can definately hear the engine screaming but these litlle engines were made to take the abuse(not that it is hurting the engine). I don't care how you drive....I can't see getting under 30 mpg out of this engine,I get 36 in town. I drive a 5 speed.

I just went on a trip and kept it around 75 with the ac on. I got about 28 mpg, which is just a little higher than what I get around town. I don't know how these people are getting over 30. In southern cali you get driving off the road if your not going 80....

How are you calculating your MPG? 28 is a bit higher then city for you? That doesnt sound right. Where is cali whe it comes to sea level? Higher or lower? Doing 80 in the car will make it eat gas but if you keep the car at a decnetly low RPM you should get pretty good gas mileage.

the AC seems to make the fuel gauge needle fall dramatically faster than not using AC.

I've done two tanks on my xA now, 32mpg on the first (but I have no idea how much gas the dealership put in it so the first tank's mileage is suspect), and 34mpg on my 2nd tank. This includes mostly 70mph highway commuting, (with some AC use).

I had it at nearly 200 miles at the half tank mark, but then due to crappy weather I had to run the defogger (which runs the AC) for a few days, and the needle sucked down way faster during those days.

Yeah, the motor buzzes along at 3500 for 70mph, but it's not particularly loud and it is not annoying in any way, like my MR2 Turbo's motor at 3000 where it really resonates. Little motors like this don't mind a bit of rpm if they're designed for it - like bike motors. The stereo comfortably covers up any potentially bothersome noises.

Yeah, me too (although it's pretty much all city for me).

I did do a test-I helped a friend move, and I followed his Uhaul truck for about 75 miles (fueling up before and afterwards, and drafting the truck as much as possible without it being dangerous, and he never went faster than 60 or 65). I only had a little stuff in my car (I drove so I could get home).

I got about 35 MPG for that trip, so the numbers aren't impossible, you just need perfect conditions to get the government numbers.

Wow! I'm amazed that you guys are getting such low mileage. I get 39 HWY and 35 or better in 'city' driving (I've got a 5-spd). If I was getting 25mpg (or anything in the low 30s) I'd be really PO'd.

You guys drive automatics? Have any mods? Heavy weels? A trunk full of lead?

I've gotten up to 41 mpg, at 55 mph with no a/c and windows up. With a/c on, it drops to about 36-38 at the same speed. I have header, exhaust, and manual transmission. There's a few more threads about fuel mileage that go into more detail, so look around for them.

I think the reason you got 41 is the fact that everything up there is covered in ice and you were sliding most of the time.....

I have an auto, 17" wheels, keep the AC on and get around 33 mpg. I go to work hiway and come home on surface streets, so it is a good mix.

Some times, you're right about the ice! But seriously, this was during the summer time with my summer tires and 17" wheels.

Default FUEL CONSUMPTION PRETTY GOOD

I drive 150 miles a day (mostly freeway) to work and back. I average 33 - 35 depending on A/C use and how I'm driving. I try to keep it around 70/3500 rpm but often find I'm doing 75 - 80. I did call Scion and they said the high RPM's are normal and of no concern. Also stated that once the car gets broken in (around 5000 miles) MPG will improve and become more static. I'm considering adding cruise control to assist maintaining speed. I noticed a difference in my last car (which I totalled) when I used cruise vs not (no I wasn't using cruise when I crashed the car). All said, for a 5sp with stock everything, I'm pleased (and laugh when I see these SUV's flying past me on the freeway).
