poor gas mileage?

Is it me or do you get better gas milage just after a oil change, and worse just before. We average about 29 overall. When the car was new we were getting 32.

the manual on the tc says use 5-30 and the dealer put in 10-30. the manual also says '10-30 may be used, but should be replaced with 5-30 at the next change'. hmm... anyhow, my 'per qtr tank' mileage seems to have suffered a little from 90 mi to mid 80's. must be those first time startups and the 'thicker' oil?

Haven't been paying that much attention. But this week I drove from Charlotte to Raleigh and back, then Charlotte to Atlanta and back. Got 32.77 mpg cruising between 75 and 85 mph most of the time. Not bad for shoving a box with a 1.5L engine.

when i fist got mine i was barley breaking 25 mpg, now i average about 30, mostly street, i did have a miracle tank once, got 409 miles on 10.7 gallons, that was highway stuck at about 55 mph the whole time

I know I get better mpg when the wife and kids are with me, which proves to me it's mostly driving habits...

So after seeing these sort of questions, i decided to test my own.
RESULTS:
Average Tank- 230
Lowest Tank- 225
Highest Tank- 243
Average Shift Points - between 2,500rpm-3,000rpm

A mix of highway and city.

Now i can go back to filling up after it passes half way.

The only thing that tells us is that you fill up before the tank is all the way empty. there's nothing there that can help us judge mpg, you need the M

I would say that it has to be the aero, I have a 2000 echo and I average between 35 and 38 in town and I am not to easy on it. On trips I will get over 40 unless I take my wife, kids, and all of their stuff. Worst ever was 26 in winter and loaded to the gills. Best thing I ever did was run 0w-30, lag from motor is so much less even with air on.

Default Gas Mileage

Just got back from a trip to south georgia. From Cleveland, Tn. to Valdosta, Ga. on one tank. 335 miles, running 70 to 75 mph I averaged 33 mpg even. On the return trip with the air on and running 75 to 80 mph my mileage dropped to 32.2 mpg. I have a RS 2.0 box. I have heard of some people getting lower mileage, and it seems that my box does get better mileage at lower speeds. Its best is 35.27 mpg. driven at 55 on highways, with a little interstate thrown in. Mine is an automatic with the stock tires, but American Racing 686 wheels. I see 3000rpm at 70 mph. It has been suggested that reseting the computer by disconnecting the negative battery cable for about 5 minutes could correct this problem. That was a suggestion from the Scion sales manager where I bought mine. If the computer is hung in the cold engine mode, it runs a little richer. Meaning less gas mileage. Has anyone tried this to see if it helps?

I live in Kansas City, and I do mine in June and December every year. We have such a big range in temp it is hard for the computer to keep things at their peek. Toyota told me the same thing, and I have never had big differences in my mpg after I started doing it. They told me 15 min., but next time I will try 5. I hate waiting.

Well if gas gets to 3 bucks per gallon then at 2000 gals of gas is the break even point.

2000 at 30 miles gallon equals 60,000 miles

You need to calculate the difference in MPG between the Scion and the "other" car...and then determine the cash value of the improvement...

Example...

Scion gets 30 MPG...12k miles per year it takes 400 gallons of gas...at $3/gal you spend $1200/year on gas....

Prius gets 50 MPG...12k miles per year it takes 240 gallons of gas...at $3/gal you spend $720/year on gas....

Prius saves you $480/year...if the Prius is $6k more than the Scion...$480 divided by $6k...

It takes you 12.5 years to "break even"

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

Default Gas mileage

Just turned 1000 miles and am getting 22.5 miles per gallon in the XB...I hope it gets better when it breaks in...because thats a big difference from the advertised mileage. I do 75city/25 highway. Its supposed to get 30 around town....So if I can get 25 I'll be happy.

Dang, they went to the calculator on me...whew! Well, I live in Ga. 87 octance jumps between $2.06 and $2.19, not $3.00/gal and what if you are financing like most hard working Americans...calculate the interest into owing 6K more also. Another thing also is that the price of gas will change from year to year. If could be $4.00/gal in 3 years for all we know. There are a lot of variables to consider even the idea of owning an xB 10+ years. The only point that I was triyng to make is that the MSRP would change significantly on a great little car which I, myself would not have been able to afford budget-wise if it were a hybrid.
If they could make the xB for under $15K as a hybrid, I'm on the bandwagon...NO DOUBT!!

Use a good quality fuel... always! I've consistantly used Shell 87 octane and now have 2,500 miles on my xB. I'm getting 32MPG city driving and right at 40MPG highway cruising at 70MPH. I have the auto transmission. I live at 5,500 feet elevation in Denver and we too have the oxygenated fuel from November to March. I just checked again yesterday and got 36MPG city and I think that could be due to my last tank was not being the "winter blend" of oxygenated fuel. I will typically get 330-340 miles on a tank of city driving and expect that to improve with warmer weather coming. The xB is stock everything.

Toyota recommends quality fuel in these engines and I believe this has much to do with people getting above 30MPG.
