potential xB buyer has quick question
Looking at selling my current vehicle a 97 jeep wrangler, lifted, larger tires and all, and I didnt think Id be able to switch to an actual "car" until I actually sat in an xB, dude I loved it!
My main question is how the mileage is affected when you mount up some roof racks? is it really that big of a change? I get maybe like 14mpg right now with my jeep so I know anything I get will be a HUGE leap from that.
and also how have the warrantys been treating you all? another main draw to the car I have is the toyota reputation that comes behind it. do you find the dealerships are pretty good at honoring their coverage?

xB good choice. The roof rack should not really change the great gas mpg of the xb. You should not have any warrenty problems because its a toyota. jk but find a dealer that you can get along with and be able to kinda build a friendship with that right there will go a long way.

Most Toyota dealerships stand firmly by their warranty commitments. Toyotas are in general very reliable.
You could get a Yakima detachable roof rack and only put it on when you need it.
Now go buy your xB.
Yeah I'd say about 3mpg on average with the roof rack on. But the Yakima rack is easy to remove and toss into the rear seat. I'm not sure if the ones we sell at the dealership come with the locks or not, but they are cheap to buy at any backpacking store.
Have fun with your xB.

The mpg difference will be huge, but might not be EPA. It seems about 50/50 experience less than the EPA.
I experienced 24-25 mpg the first 3000 miles or so and then went up to about 28/31 after a few oil changes.
Fun little cars.

yeah Im really going to miss the jeep, but its uses have really been few and far between off roading wise, the occasional driving on the beach and what not. are they pretty reliable like on long drives? like 400 mile trips?
Well, if you're doing a ton of highway driving I'd expect your gas milage to drop a little when you add roof racks. 3 MPG sounds a little high. That's almost a 10% drop in mileage. But, with the Xb's it seems like the mileage is all over the place with people. I just got 35 mpg on my last tank. People have been complaining about gettting mid twenties, but I've never dropped below 31 MPG. So who knows for sure.
The yakima racks are great. Once assembled, they are easy to put on and take off. I have not had them on enough to really measure milage though. They don't create that much wind resistance it seems (unless they are loaded). I average between 31-34 city&hwy with a light foot.
I have 30,000 miles now on my box with ZERO problems. Plus my gas mileage is still averaging 34 on the highway. Take 3 mpg off of that and that's still better than 90% of the cars on the road.
With gas prices getting ever higher people are re-evaluating what they drive and the trend is moving once again to what they need rather than what they'd really want. I enjoy pulling into gas stations and watching people shell out up to 50 bucks to fill up as I hand the attendant a 20 and get back change. So many faces look in awe.
With the box you not only get what you need but you get a very versatile car that can hold a surprising amount of stuff and/or people. Plus you get a very reliable vehicle.
Some things I've hauled are: a stove, a ladder (with front seat folded) and biggest of all was 2 complete sets of twin beds at the same time (tailgate up but not much overhang).

what about that "faring" thing or whatever its called, I know yakima has them, that like plate that goes in front of the rack, is that something to look into? or does it not really do much to help things out?

The fairing is more for wind noise, but may help on mpg, too. Depends on the load above it...
Hey Golongboard..... I traded in my 01 Nissan Xterra for an XB and I thought the same thing...... I love Trucks but this little thing kicks some A$$
I put on a Yakima rack for bikes. I got about 18 mpg with my Xterra and now I get around 30 mpg
Nice looking ride SoCalMike, check out my link below my signature and tell me what you think. BTW, We also had a yellow Nissan Xterra when they first came out. Liked it a bunch, but not as much as the xB
