Default Rattling sound in engine then quiet and Big oil leak

There was a metallic sound from the engine for a while then it stopped and so did the charging.
I inspected and there is tons of oil all over the place. Some for in the alternator belt and made it slide off.

What could have caused the leak?

Geezus Christ......shoot that thing already!

Well, the rattling sounds very typical of a damaged water pump.

Maybe one of the water pump fins have broken off (which is not likely) and was rattling around as the water pump was spinning. Eventually, the broken fin got broke into small enough pieces and went into the coolant passage (which would eliminate the rattling sounds).

Maybe the water pump impeller has become dislodged from the water pump shaft and is/was scraping against the engine block. Possible. But again, not likely.

Maybe, the bearing on the water pump has failed, and has allowed the pulley, shaft & pump impeller to move towards the engine block resulting in the rattling sound. And the reason for the sound going away is because material on the fins of the impeller were grinded off due to contacting the engine block. And the liquid dripping is actually engine coolant.

The space between the engine block and the water pump blades is very small. Probably smaller than the thickness of a finger nail. Doesn't take much for a bad bearing to allow the pump blades to contact the engine block.

The dripping liquid coming off the air conditioner compressor appears to be engine coolant, not oil.

Perhaps the oil leak you suspect is simply the oil which the hot engine coolant is "cleaning off" the engine surfaces.

Coolant is slippery stuff, it will take a belt off.
Went thru a puddle of it on my motorbike while braking for a corner. steering went lock to lock and the ABS kicked in and saved my butt.
Thought it was diesel, but the smell said it was coolant.

yep.....coolant is slippery..... I bought a Saab car with the leaky water pump which the coolant kept dripping onto the serpentine belt and the serpentine belt kept falling off

Ok so it was a coolant sprinkler that picked up all the oil residue.

The water pump bearing was shot. That made the pulley wobble and the belt came off easily as a result.
so the sound was the water pump screeching. The silence was the belt coming off and the water pump being left not spinning.
