Default Rear Defrost Question

Hey All,

I have owned my xA for 2 months now and I love it to death, but I think there is a problem with my rear defrost no turning off. I was wondering if someone could tell me if the defrost light turns off or the button pops (or both) after the 15 minuets are up? Also how fast does the outside mirror’s defrost, I am not certain that is working either.
:?:

Thanks in advance

if its the same as the xB (it should be) the light will turn off after 15-20 mins.

i am not aware of outside mirrors having a defrost (it was mentioned in another thread that it is there)

did you turn on the rear defroster and see how long it does take to turn off?
someone mentioned it took up to 30 mins on theirs...

I had it on for about 45 minuets the first time. The light was still on, the button was still push in, and there was the smell/feeling of something electrical over heating. I used it again and left it on for about 30 minuets, no smell/feeling, but the light and button had not changed.

As all devices the user(owner) manuals does not answer all of my questions, but it says that the rear defrost should control the defrost for the outside mirrors. This is also is the same section that says my rear defrost should cycle off, but does not say how it indicates that function.

well the button should not stay in. (it is a momentary button not a latching one)
take it to the dealer, tell them you smelled that funky electrical smell. good luck

No, it does not turn off. . . it says so in your manual. . . and no, we do not have side view mirror defrosters. . . if your defroster turns off, you blew a fuse.

The only rear defrosters that turn off, are the momentary button ones, and the xA is not so equipped.

ok,
I will take a closer look at my manual, again, which book and page did you find that at, djct_watt?

I cant believe that they would not put that kind of circuit on a timer. If this is the case, i will just have to keep it in mind

my xb has a momentary button, it is on a timer and does turn its self off.
i can not see the xa and xb being different on this.

I saw the xB thread about the miss print in the manuals about the heated outside mirrors. I understand that the button does not pop out, but I would hope that the light would turn off after 15-30 minutes indicating that the defroster is off. I will go back though my manual, but i think will still drop off my car at the dealer. I would like to hear from a few more xA owners who have used their defrost recently.

Living where I do, I find it helpful that the rear window defroster does not turn off. On the company-owned Explorer, having to turn the defroster back on every fifteen minutes is incredibly annoying.

However, I do lament the lack of side mirror defrosters. That's my only qualm.

Ok. . . the difference is that I OWN an xA, and it does NOT have a momentary button, so it IS "different on this." It's also different in the fact that it is shaped differently, lacks tinted windows, cannot fold down the front seats flush with the rears(they are different seats and mechanically lock, preventing them from being reclined further), different lock mechanisms, no standard keyless entry, different springs, on and on and on yada yada yada

in fact, the manual TELLS you to turn it off, even when the key is out, to keep the battery from being drained.

Never used the defrost yet, but the xA doesn't come with heated mirror, no?

Huh?

no, it does not come with heated mirrors. . . or at least it is not specified to have such, nor does the manual mention it. However, if you start moving at about 40+ mph, they defrost themselves.

yes and the xA does not have VSC and trac. but they both share the same chassis, motor, trans, brakes, suspension, window motors, window switches, ac, ventalation systems, dash vents, radios, yada, yada, yada

They share more than they are different. again i can't see them being diff. on this....

I have owned an XA since Feb. 04. I can tell you in no uncertain terms, the XA rear defrost will not ever turn itself off. You HAVE to turn it off yourself. It is not like the XB in this case. Oh, and not heated side view mirrors either, I asked the dealer when I bought it, it doesn't have them.

Thank you all for your help.

I will cancel my appointment with the dealer. The funny smell must have been me leaving it on too long. As I have come to learn that manuals are just a guide and you have to test the product out yourself. If anyone cares, page 78 of my manual, the bold type under picture says something about the outside mirrors, but says nothing much about it after that. Then it say to push the button to turn it on and push it again to turn it off. Then in a separate paragraph below the “how to use” section, it says that it will shut down in 15 minutes. I am going to believe you and say that it does not turn off. I will just have to keep that in mind.

Thanks again

so if the manual says it should shut down (turn itself off) and does not, i would take it to the dealer and have them fix it.

in the end if you are comfortable with it, enjoy it.
