Default Removal of airbox snorkle-BIG MPG! UPDATE 4.0!

I know this mod is nothing new, and I'm sure its been covered here enough as far as instructions, pros and cons, etc., but what I can't believe is the difference it made in my mileage! I've waited a couple of weeks to run a few tanks of gas just to make sure it wasn't just some quirk increasing my MPG.
When I installed my K&N filter, it jumped my mileage by about 1.5 - 2 mpg, and based on the "butt dyno" only, it seemed like the car had a very slight increase in "ooomph". Taking the snorkle off really didn't seem to change the performance of the car that I could tell - other than giving the intake/exhaust a bit fuller, richer tone - but my mileage increased dramatically.
I commute 160 miles a day, 3-4 days a week in Los Angeles traffic, so while traffic conditions may vary a bit, my driving history stays pretty much the same over time.
My average MPG for the 7 tanks previous to the snorkle removal was 32.63 (this was after my aftermarket tires and wheels were installed, hence the lower mpg than my old readings on stock tires).
The average for the 7 tanks since I removed the snorkle is 37.08!!!
That's more than a 4.5 MPG improvement!
For an investment of exactly $0.00, and about 2 minutes of time!
I'm blown away... (and thinking about slapping the stock tires back on just to see how high I can take that MPG number!)...especially since gas just hit $3.15/gallon at the corner station!

how did you take the snorkel off? i was thinking of doing that but did not dare take the airbox apart

what about putting some holes in the airbox too? i wonder if that would improve mpg/performance...

Pics, please, of the removal............or if u can send me to where I can find the thread.

What are the cons of removing the snorkel?

I might just try this mod once I get a new tank of gas.

I understand what you mean. I have a BLitz Induction Cover. There is no box under it or snorkel. Totally liberated air travel.
If you see a difference just doing what you did then you can understand why the BLitz is so cool to have.

You can also swisscheese your airbox but a blitz is not that much money and its very JDM.

Good luck.

you might want to keep the airbox intact for later needs.

remember, that the longer the distance the 1.5L engine must draw air, the warmer it may get as well. pullin ght eairbox intake shortens the distance and may slightly increase engine response, but not HP. There have been some curious free engine modifications done and I will have to try a few just to see if they are myths or not. I average 25 to 27 mpg rolling a VIP kit and heavy Work wheels. Let's see if there is any consistency to these "mods". Where is the Mythbusters when I need them.....

Can't be too complicated if it takes "two minutes", but I'd like to know also what the mod entails. Please advise!

so I checked out my xB. I wanted to see where the air will be entering the airbox( never looked) since I haven't really played with the engine. Air intake is now next to the block. Not sure if that is smart or not. Not well protected and there can be ALOT more debris getting into the airbox that way. that got me thinkin to adding a larger diameter intake port rather than removing the original altogether.

The removal? Very simple. Take a look under your hood. There's a long black plastic tube of various diameters and bulges that starts at the airbox (the box that you open to replace your air filter in) and ends up with a big open end near your battery. There is just ONE screw that attaches it up near your battery (near the back of your driver side headlight), then you sort of pull the other end off the airbox by wiggling it back and forth. The whole thing will take you maybe 90 seconds!
I can still take pics if anybody needs clearer instructions...

Uh, that's what the air filter is for! What can get into the engine that couldn't before? (Besides more AIR!)

This is one of those things where I'm thinking there's a durn good reason for that part to be there, otherwise you'd think they'd just not put it on in the first place.

Could be mostly for decreased intake noise, and possibly for minimizing water in the filter box.

Exactly right Ted! After I removed mine I routed some aluminum tubing from the opening over to infront of the drivers side wheelwell to duplicate a CAI. It worked great with the K&N drop in filter untill later when I went with a short ram YDF.

my point is, your gonna suck up a lot more debris into the intake box resulting a more frequent filter replacement. I mean, S/L is all about cheap mods I know. but this would or could cost more money over the long run. Already we're getting how great it sounds over how the mileage is going up. I would rather try a larger diameter pipe.

If you get a blitz you have no obstruction at all on the bottom of the airbox.

Two bars hold it up and it has a great filter with protective grating.
