My nationwide coverage has it classified as a wagon.... just and FYI
Classifing it as a SUV is the biggest crock of ____ I have heard, it obviously can be an SUV it gets more than 15 MPG (J/K). I'd ask to speak with a corperate headquarters or something, sometimes local agents are brain dead.

The NHTSA classifies the xB as a truck. Toyota made the xB fit the minimum requirements so that the rear windows coudl be tinted from the factory, and so that the vehicle could help with CAFE standards when it comes to their average MPG on their truck lineup: http://www.ita.doc.gov/td/auto/cafe.html
USAA insurance originally had the xB listed as a wagon, but in the past few weeks have changed it to an SUV. Im not sure why though, my insurance premium hasnt gone up at all either.

Actually... I can settle this.
The EPA has the final say.
The xB is an "MPV" which is the same classification they give SUV's.
MPV is for Multi Purpose Vehicle. That designation is determined by cubic feet of interior space for the size of the car (compact, subcompact etc) Toyota didn't have to "do" anything to make it an "MPV" it just is by nature.
The MPV designation is what allows Toyota to apply the tint to the rear windows in all 50 states, yes.
The xB is not a wagon or a van. It's an MPV.
Look on the inside door plate. It should/may also be on your title and registration.
MPV
Your insurance company may have it's own arbitrary distinctions for different types of cars/trucks, but these are not recognized by the federal government. The insurance companies have their own methods and motives for classifying vehicles.

I have Usaa too and didnt pay attion to what group they put my XB in. I did trade in my 2002 nissan frontier for the XB and the XB is 9 dollars less a month them my older cheaper truck. So Im happy :lol
I've seen it classified as a "Tall Wagon" in Japan and "Compact Wagon" stateside. Technically I suppose the MPV fits because of the large amount of internal space.
On the street though, I'd fight to the death anyones assumption that it's an SUV. Ground clearance is a big part of it.

I cant remember correctly but i am looking to purchase a xB in the next 6 months and my insurance company classified it as a Minivan, but they said it would pass for a SUV if it had truck plates which i believe you can get but whats the purpose? pay more for insurance and plates just to not wear your seat belt...
