Default screeching sound coming from driver side back - solution

i drove a week when i would hear (and sometimes not hear) a metal on metal grinding sound coming from the rear. i thought it was the brakes but sometimes the sound would go away so i didnt even pay TOO much attention to it during that week (drove maybe 100 miles in total)...

The grinding sound turned out to be my brake pads being worn down. as a result, they scratched up the rotor surface

to have the pads replaced + the rotors resurfaced, at the dealer, i paid $328 (it was like $270 but with taxes + an oil change, it came out to that...)

so my question is - was that a lot of money? how much does that typically cost? i paid it since i wanted to get an oil change and didnt want to risk driving around and having even more damage done to the rotors... if i paid too much, obviously, im going to try to find another place to do my brakes next time...

^^^ LOL - no need for sorry, i am not a technical car person so i dont know how much that should have cost. i paid for it just cuz i didnt wanna now run around looking for another place. in the meantime, im going to try to find a mechanic in the area that i can go to for future issues - and not to the damn dealer!

lol @ the wheels fallin off. that would have sucked! i want to take this thing up to at least 150k miles!@# if not more!

stopping at 15k would have sucked =((((((

^^^ no i haven't because mp3car store, IMHO, is expensive as ____.

if you want to buy a touch screen monitor - consider an ebay seller. I have seen tons of "no name" but good quality 7" and 8" touch screens for about $200 from there... their 7" lilliput is $251 which i guess is an OK price but you can find cheaper.

many people from that site (that arent affiliated with it ) have ordered from there and have had no problems.

hope that helps,

The price you paid sounds about right for a Dealership...

LOL old yeller.

The price is what the dealer charged but I am wondering if anyone else has gotten the mentioned work done OUTSIDE of a dealership - and how much did they pay?

Pads: $22 for the cheapo's up to $58 for ceramic. Does both sides.
Facing rotors: Figure about $10-15 ea at the local shop.
Labor: Free if you do it yourself. I'd guess around $100 from a shop.
You paid too much.

BTW: Brakes should last A LOT longer than 15k miles, and the wear should be even on both sides.

^^^ yeah i was surprised to find out that it was my brakes too... I don't know why... i do a lot of braking since i drive in the city like 80% of the time but it's breaking from like 30-40mph not from like 90mph which would cause the brakes to wear much quicker.... i duno what happened =/

as much as I hate telling people this... yeah, you paid too much, I would personally suggest learning to do it yourself, it's not that difficult of a task, and you save like $250. But getting it changed on 15k? you mast break hard, try breaking sooner and softer. I just changed my brakes at 36k. As for the unevenness, might be something was misaligned when they first installed the breaks (or you do alot of autox lol)

wait, I'm confused, you have rotors in the rear?? or was it the front brakes sounding like a rear noise? BTW I'm at a Chrysler dealer and we're $179.95 for brakes with machining rotors.

^^^ don't xB's have rotors in the rear and disc's up front? I could be wrong - i know a little about cars but dont know the details on the xB's brakes... whatever the work was (on disc or rotor), what they did was "resurface" it... i hope that makes sense... hehe

and, yeah, i tend to drive pretty aggressively here in manhattan... it's just the ride of the xB is so nice and smooth - it's like gliding... I've never had that sense with any of my other cars so maybe i overdo it =X lol...

If you had the rear drums replaced at 15K miles then you got raped! Typically the front brakes ( with rotors ) need to be changed from 25 - 40K miles depending on how hard you are on them. The rears should last at least 60K miles. The rear shoes and drums only do about 30% or less of the braking. And at the tune of 300+ i would dam sure learn to replace the brakes myself.

FYI ... fronts are a piece of cake to replace. And im sure you could have gotton replacemet rotors to the tune of $30 a piece .. or have the original rotors recut for about 15$. The rear is a little more invovled, but it can be done in a driveway if you have the patience.

I guess I got raped... They didn't even use lube... =-((((

lol

Thanks for your posts, i really appreciate it. I'm going to try to get a friend to help me with this stuff the next time it's needed. my xB has mainly like 90% city driving - stop and go every minute or maybe two - so i thought this was normal/typical wear and tear since i drive fast + brake very often in my box...

anyway, thank you guys once again for the gr8 info!

FYI there are guys that are local that can help you out with stuff like that, rather then taking it to a dealership and have them bend you over the counter.
