Default Steering wheel shakes at around 75-80?

Is this normal? I don't really drive that fast usually because I'm rarely on highways.

Try balancing your tires. MOst of the time the shaking is due to unbalanced tires which would be noticable around those speeds.

I got new wheels & tires a few weeks ago and I would assume they would've balanced them then?

Not necessary, you said there new? Check you wheels and see if you got those small weight tabs on, normally it's set on the lip either clipped on outside near the sidewall inside or outside. The tabs are put on to offset any counter weight caused by either the tire or the wheel itself. When I got my box, I bought some set of 17" wheels at a local wheel shop. I notice that around 60-70, my steering wheel shakes, brought back to the shop and the guy who installed forgot to check for balance. Re-installed and the shaking feeling was gone.

Yeah I saw them hammer in little weight-looking things. Take it back to where I got it done and tell them that?

Described symptoms are indicative of an out of balance condition. If you take them back and have the guy verify the balance and he says it is ok, look for a defect on one of the tires. A ply separation will balance but cause the described symptom at speed. If the mechanic says the balance is good, take him for a test ride to demonstrate the shake. A defect can cause a tire failure same as a blow out. Dangerous. Tire defects are more common than a dealer cares to admit.

Go out and by hubcentric rings, guaranteed.

The master toyota tech that installed my wheels and aligned my car told me they would be needed to remove vibrations at higher speeds.

I got some for $14 shipped off ebay.

Are you sure your rings are the right size? Each wheel has a different inner bore size and if your rings aren't the right size, that may still be an issue. OEM is 54.1 and my wheels inner bore is 73.

I guess I'll have to put my rings on before my next oil change to see if they make a different or not.

hotbox, sure you lugs are torqued down to the OEM 80lbs each?

i got the rings with the rims. they got them for me.

i've never torqued down lugnuts in my life.

i've never had a problem either.

the hundreds of cars i've worked on have never had a problem. all about the just right tightness , lol.

and 80lbs may be oem but allow wheels are typically suggested at 70lbs.

I agree with hotbox...I have rotated, flipped, re-balanced, you name it i've done it and I STILL have vibration at 75-80...I think it's a combination of being lowered and aftermarket rims...I guess I will get used to it!

Do you have hubcentrics rings??

I just want to say, if you don't have any and notice the vibration, get some - they are cheap!

I have the stock wheels and no vibration at any speed only have had it up to about 87mph but smooooth as silk. Check for junk inside the rim and make sure you have the hub caps on right and they are CLEAN. A little dirt or mud will throw the tire out of balance. Also jack it up and check for uneven brake drag and see if the tire is out of round from that. Hit any curbs? Check for missing weights sometimes they hammer them on and they get knocked off. Also take the wheel off the hub and check to make sure the mounting surface is clean and the lugs tightened up properly and evenly. OOPS just realized you have mags - never mind the hubcaps. Check your weights and spin the tire in the air and check for bent rims or wobble. They balance them on the center hole and you mount them on the lug nut holes - not the same if the lug nut holes are drilled a little off.

I've never noticed a vibration I have aftermarket 17s, and I've had my box up to around 115 several times, sounds like they might have the heavier section of a wheel and tire matched up, if it looks like they have alot of weight on the tire take it back, could also be a steering issue

oh and I've never heard of hubcentrics, and can guarantee I don't have them

So what do I say when I take it back?

I got new wheels and tires here recently and now my steering wheel is shaking after about 75mph. Can you check the balance on the tires?

take it back to the people that you bought it from(assuming you bought the wheels and tires locally) and have them mount and balance them again, check the rims for any defects like flat spots, same for the tires, and check the weights they put on, if there are alot of weights grouped up, or a large weight(4-6" long) then its not mounted correctly, you might have flat spots on a tire or a bent rim
