TRD "Quickshifter"
Well what's the official consensus on the quickshifter? I just got my $50 gift card and think this would be a great mod. I did do a search, but I'm looking for some people's recent opinions. Thanks folks!
Check if TRD Sparks accepts the gift certificate. If so, use it towards a TWM Performance Short Shifter... :D
Is the TWM THAT much nicer than the TRD? I like the TRD because it's the entire assembly and hey it comes with a shift **** too.
But, alot that I've read, it's a toss-up between the TRD and TWM.
The TRD quick shifter isn't that much of an upgrade, imo. Most people barely felt a difference. I mean, it's really up to you. I personally don't care for a lot of TRD (USA) products. I definitely don't care for the quick shifter kit...I love my TWM short shifter.
My friend has a TRD quick shifter kit for his Celica GTS. It came with the same shift ****. All of us call it the gonad ****.
I think it's just a cheap $25 ****...

That's hilarious. But yeah, I just got on the phone to check the price at my local dealership and I also asked if this could effect my warranty. He said if I have them install it no, but if I install it then yes. Looks like I'll be getting something else with my 50 bucks. I'm not paying someone $100 to take out like 5 screws and undo a clip.
Since I came from sports cars, I have to say that it feels nothing like what a short shifter on say... a WRX or an S2000 feels like.
You know, when I first got the car, I hated the way it shifted and I tried a dealer's car with the TRD quickshifter and I thought it made it go from truck-like to about normal, so that's why I got it. But after driving with the stock shifter for about two months, I've gotten used to the "long" throws and I really don't even think about it anymore... but since I had the $50 gift certificate, I figured that it was the only thing they had that I remotely wanted.
I dunno, I just thought it was a waste of money to buy foam steering wheel covers and shiny chrome valve stems from my dealer, but that's just me. If I really wanted one, I could go to an auto parts store and shell out all of $5, instead of using Toyota's "generous" $50 that doesn't even come close to how much money they're making off your interest.
But enough of that. It is very nice of them to give us a little back, since it's pretty obvious that the reason a lot of people buy Scions are for their customizability.

I've got the TRD shift kit. It noticeably shortens the throws between gears and tightens things up a bit. I can't comment on the TWM product since I've never heard of it. I had a shift cable repaired under warranty and took the opportunity to ask the dealer if they could install the TRD short shift kit and spot me the labor (since they'd already have the works open) When the guy OK'd it I just went ahead and did it. I'm pretty pleased with it and I know at least it will never be an issue if I have any other warranty work done.
If you factor in the labor cost though the shift kit becomes more expensive. If I were you and it was my first mod then I would take the same money and spend it on something more likely to produce a real performance improvement. Maybe a thicker rear anti-sway bar, for example. The short shift is a nice mod for later on down the road.

I appreciate everyone's comments thus far. I figure I'd plan on doing the short-throw eventually down the road anyway, so 'd put this 50 bucks towards the shifter and just get that out of the way now. I don't want to just "waste" the money on something that doesn't necessarily iterest me. I'm certainly annoyed that they are trying to charge an extra hundred bucks just to install the damn thing, then have the nerve to tell me that if I install it, it would void my warranty. It's a TRD part so I figured it, an all associated parts, should be backed by Toyota. My main concern is the trans. I just have this great feeling that with my luck, I'd install this and 100 miles down the road I lose a 1-2 synchro or something and be SOL. Who knows.....

I wouldn't be too concerned about the warranty, however I was talked into the extended warranty at the dealership so it just seems like I'd be shooting myself in the foot. I'm truly regretting that purchase.
I just got the quickshifter last week. I put it in in about 45 minutes (probably more like 30, but i wasnt really checking). The length of the overall lever is the same. But, there a several big differences. The lever has a slightly different bend to it. The pivot point is different, allowing for shorter throws. And my favorite, is the shifter housing doesnt have the rubber mounts the stock one has, instead it has steel mounts. In the end, can you shift faster, maybe. Does it have the ricer boy small height, no. But it feel so much more positive. It does require more effort, but the shifter feels more like that of a high end sports car transmission, instead of a cheapy car feel. There is a noticable lack of play in the linkage now. I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend it to everyone. Plus the trd shift ****, though light, is sweet.
and it cant void your warranty unless you install it wrong, and its real easy to install. i wouldnt pay the dealer to do it, find if someone on this site who is mechanically inclined lives near by and have them help out.
Hey ahurdl01, thanks a ton for the reply. You very well may have sold me the shifter!
I might just end up getting the carbon fiber appliques for the gas door and b-pillar. Whi knows....thanks alot for your input though. I'm certainly leaning back towards the shifter.
Edit: and for the record, I do all my own work. That was why I didn't want to get the shidter in the first place. The only reason I wouldn't install it was because the dealer said it would void my warranty. Well, I'm certainly not going to pay someone $100 to probably mess something up that I'm positive I could very well do correctly on my own. I don't like other people touching my car. :D

no problem, i was unsure if i could put it in at first, but it was easy. I am the same way, every minute the car is at the dealer is another minute it could get screwed up by the door of some soccer moms suv. another bonus i forgot to mention, and this may just be my car, was that before i put the short shifter in, i had a problem sometimes engaging reverse, like a notch (and dont worry it was always at a complete stop) but with the shortshifter i dont have this same problem.... though the issue of shifting from first to second is still present.
heres some helpful info about warranty
from Maxima.org...(since im previous maxima owner)
"Found this on a Ford site. And I quote...
"Under the Magnusson-Moss Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer's original warranty, unless that warranty clearly states the addition of aftermarket equipment automatically voids the warranty or that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure. The easiest way to check this is to look in your owner's manual under "What is not covered." Nonetheless, Dealers receive less compensation for warranty work than regular service rates and some have tried to deny warranty service. Under Magnusson-Moss Act a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before they can deny warranty coverage. If they cannot prove such claim-or proffer a questionable explanation- it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. The Federal Trade Commission (202-326-312
administers the Magnusson-Moss Act and monitors compliance with warranty law."

This is federal law. Don't let any dealer try to tell you different, if they do, go to another one or call Nissan USA and get them to give the service manager a little call too. "

I installed the TRD Quickshift in my xB, and what I'm left with is a shift-boot top that just sits unhooked and openned at the base of the shift ****. I know that, if left this way, dust will get inside the boot, and it just looks darn crappy. I have some ideas of how I will remedy this, but before I do I would like to hear what some of you might have done with yours, or maybe some suggestions.
