Like I said . . . . It's "possible" but not widespread like the fear mongering SPAM says it is.

i dont know if this has been brought up....but when we bought our xB the dealer gave us a small piece of aluminum with a code printed on it. He said if we needed a key made, bring that in and they can make us a spare key??? anyone else??

I'm still trying to understand how the person was allowed to take down your VIN

The VIN is visible from the outside of the car for police and ticketing purposes to allow easy tracking and checking of stolen vehicles.

The little tag on the key chain is the code for making the key notches sort of the combination of the key.

i dont know if yours does or not but some toyotas have the vin etched into the glass so covering up the in on the dash really wouldn't help, mine has the ecthed glass.

i looked a few weeks ago in the gst options list for an upgrade for the xb because we had a customer that didn't like his alarm on his corolla and i tried putting it on my xb but it didn't work it just fricked out but i can't remember if there is an upgrade but all regions are different

I’m kind of surprised that no one brought up the thing that happened on Scion Night at Knotts here in So Cal. Some pranksters had some kind of master remote or key of some sort. They went into a number of RS3s and stole. . . their owners manuals. I’m not sure if they took anything else from anyone, but I know they ignored the stereos, purses, and other valuables in a number of cars. The RS3 in our club was one of them. (They thought they were nuts until they learned it had happened to others.) Only RS3s -- no other vehicles. Weird huh?

Just a little off topic, but since someone already brought up the little aluminum keytag the dealer gave you so you would have the key code available to you should you need a new key made at some point...

One of the entries in my cellphone's directory only has a 5 digit number listed. It wouldn't make much sense to most folks, but *I* know what that number is.

Just a tip should you ever lose you keys and need to get some new ones quickly.
