What does short shifter do?

Default What does short shifter do?

What do the short shifters do, and what do they feel like? Do they just speed up the shift by reducing the throw with a shorter lever?

In test drives, I thought the sotck shifter was OK but a little long and slow and vague in throw. I avoid speed shifting, and do slow methodical shifts to extend synchro iife, but would like a more positive feel. Would a short shifter do this?

It moves the pivot point so the **** doesn't have to move as far to change the gear.

there are two types...

short shifters or short throw shifters

short shifters are just that...short. if the shifter **** is three inches lower you don't need to move it too far to change gears. the angle of throw is still the same.
it is like this (stock) \/ or this v (shorter, but same angle)

then you have short thorw shifters...usually the same height but they move the piviot point to reduce the distance needed to change gears....
like this... (stock) \/ or |/ (short throw but same height)

these cars are cable shifted cars. there is not much you can do to change the feel of changing gears...

OK, I understand all that has been noted. I just want the best, most direct shifting experience, like with my present Mazda truck. Will an aftermarket shifter help, and which one?

I just had my TRD short throw installed. I definetly feel more "direct'. The stock one feels slopy and it is tighter with the TRD. However, because it is FWD, it uses cables. So it will not feel quite as tight as short throw on a RWD car/truck.

Check the parts review section and see what others have said about the different shifters available. Best I could tell you since I have an auto.

Hi, like dgHotLava said, you can find different kinds of short shifters out there. But one category he forgot to mention are the short throw shifter kits.

We offer such kits in which you get:
- A short throw shifter
- A weighted **** (height ajustable, weighted for more precise shifts and increased smoothness)
- Aluminium bushings (they remove the sloppiness caused by the stock rubber bushing).

The TWM link was for a tC but I went to xB OK. So the TWM is a shorter shift lever that installs in the stock shift assembly. The downloaded instructions did not show replacing rubber bushings with aluminum. Where do those bushings go?

I love the illustrations.

They may be simple, but they actually do a good job of illustrating how short shifters and short throw shifters work.

did you guys ever find out if the tC shifter kit will work in the xA/B??? it looks exactly the same.

i didn't know how else to show it....

i remember all those honda kids taking a hacksaw to their shifters. cutting 2-3 inches off and then fitting an aftermarket **** onto the stump they left.

The ad says aluminum bushings are provided to replace the stock rubber bushings, but does not say where such bushings go, nor do the instructions show any bushing replacement.

What is the story on these bushings?
