Is the xB classified as a car or truck/van? Here in TN it makes a difference because the 2 different vehicles have laws that differ for each of them. I've thought ever since it was new that is was legally a truck/van because of what is says on the title (micro wagon). Others feel it's just another car which means now here in TN that the factory rear windows are illegally tinted at 27% (legal is no more than 35% now). If it were a truck, the windows could be as dark as you wanted from B pillars back. Anyone that knows for sure please chime in?

 

I always considered it a wagon. I don't think it would ideally fall under a truck, however, check to see what the rules are for an MPV (which most minivans are) they don't usually have rear tint restrictions.

 

MY insurance told me it was cheaper to insure because it's titled as a truck. Not sure if that was a legal binding statement or not.
It would just be nice to know for sure.

 

Here in VA it's titled as a micro van, and VA law reads you can not tint your windows darker than 35% but whatever comes on your cer from the factory is legal...

 

somebody told me that in California the DMV classifies the xB as a mini van. Personally, I classify it as a station wagon, since that what Scion advertised it as, and it's too small and light to be a van.

 

xB People in Nashville are being written tickets for their rear factory tint.
I told them I thought they were classified as a truck but could not back it up with anything but my opinion.
I hate to think people must waste a trip to court (and a days wages) to prove they are legal with the 27% rear factory tint.

 

Plain and simple I wouldn't even take a ticket from a cop for something that was on my car when I bought it. I'd wipe my ___ with the ticket, and stick it to his windshield. If you pay the ticket you're admitting guilt for something that you didn't do. The ticket should be dismissed, and the court can take the matter up with Toyota. If the tint were illegal it wouldn't be sold on the vehicle from the dealership. And why the heck would you have to miss a day of work for a court appearance? It's a court summons.... you tell your employer, go to court, and then go back to work.... sometimes it seems like you post things on this website just to read your own words..

Just tell the cop to try and peel off the rear "tint".

That's pretty messed up if it's happening. I can see one or two, but if this is happening to multiple cars, that's a problem. If you wanna be the xB activist, it's time to get in touch with the police department directly. Like I said, minivans generally come with a stock tint level, I bet they aren't getting pulled over.

Have you been personally pulled over for it? I would be preemptive and contact the PD before it happens to you.

 

In canada it is considered a SPORT WAGON. Ya i said it a sport wagon.

My question to my insurance company was how many Sports cars have 100 hp.

First of all, signing and taking receipt of a ticket is not an admission of guilt, only a "promise to appear".
Secondly, you'd have a heck of a lot more than a tinted window problem to appear in court about if you pulled that stunt, tough guy!

And BTW Jeff, my insurance company in CA considers mine a "car".

 

Jeff, in Indiana the BMV has them down as a wagon. Also, there are a couple of threads on clubxb about people getting tickets for the factory rear glass.

Here in Manitoba, it's classified as a Station Wagon. Makes sense to me... Would rather have it a truck tho.. I'd be saving like $400 a year...

ya my insurance considers it a van, which is fine for me because I pay $115 a month for full coverage...works for me, keeps my pocket full!
