xB Averaging a mere 21mpg!?!?!?
On my trip to Chicago few weeks ago, i Avg'd 24mpg. The box just doent get good gas milage. Problem is the low gearing. You say you cruise at 70mph. That means the car is runnign steady about 3k-3.2k RPM. At 80mph my box is at 4k rpm. Being the Aerodynamic wonder it is, I belive the low gearing is necissary to push it through the air at that speed. I also have heavy rims, and i know thats a big impact as well. But as we all know, MPG ratings are about as true as milli vanillis singing carreer.
You know, there is one other possibility. *gasp* the pump could be way off at that station. I've seen it happen before at a station in KY. Go to a different station next time and see if that makes any difference.
Yeah your wheel weight can make a difference. The fact that its a 5 speed doesn't help. You say you do a lot of LA city driving. With a 5 speed in the city with the a/c and larger wheels expect to get lower than average mpg's. Also loose the premium. It isn't needed. I tried it in between a few tanks of regular and noticed no difference at all in mileage. I still run a full tank of it every now and then but I don't do it often.
correct me if i am wrong, but isn't our tank only a 9.9 gal tank? if you are getting 10.9 / 11 gal in the tank, you are either topping it off too much, or there is a problem with the pump... most i have ever gotten into my tank was 10.1 gal and i had gas barely spilling out... i drive in LA, and i also have 5 spd.. i always have my foot in it, and i am on 19's and average about 30 city / highway with CIA/H/E/P
Actually the manual says 11.9 gallons.
My wife's new rs 3.0 has been getting crappy mileage since the start. It is right at 5000
miles now and on the last three tanks we have only gotten between 22 and 22.5 mpg.
The dealer has checked everything including the spark plug gap and reset the ECU.
We have driven it easy with no fast starts and we have driven for an entire tank like
crazy people. No difference. My supercharged 5sp RS 2.0 gets 26-27 regularly. I did
have an all time low of 22 while running on E10 on a road trip to Iowa. We are not teenagers
and we know how to drive a car for good mileage. She wishes she had kept her Montero
as it got 22 MPG.
I think that there is a flaw in the car somewhere. Scion must address this issue.

I know I don't drive the car that easy; I've raced cars and shifter karts for the better part of my life...I am a bit of an acceleration junky, and I always rev match my downshifts, but, I've always been within 5 mpg of the posted minimum on all my vehicles. Someone mentioned spark plug gaps...any reccomendations there? Also, I have the TRD (Racing Hart) 18's...are those that heavy? Thanks!
I have a header intake perrin pully exhaust and I dove the crap out of it a couple of tanks ago to see how bad my milage could be.I would take off fast up to 4-5000 RPMs .I took the back roads and was just flying downshifting at everycorner and then excellerating off the corner.I still got 31.5MPG. Then the next tank was all freeway at about 65 to 70 and I got 34.5. I have not been below 30MPG.I have 3200 miles on my xB. My wifes xB has had one take through it and it got 32 MPG the first tank. The second is in now and so far it looks like about the same.Something is wrong if you cant get 30MPG IMHO.
i've had my xB for about a month now. i filled up for the first time after the 1000 mile break in period today. calculated out i got 31mpg, during the break in period i was getting between 20 and 22. so it seems to get better with age.

I have a bone-stock 5-spd 05 with about 24k miles. I have never gotten less than 29 mpg; avg over the last 18 months has been 32mpg with a good mix of city and freeway driving, and my 80-85 mph trip from SLC to Boise last summer netted me 31mpg both ways. Lately I have slowed my freeway trips down to 65-70 and keep revs under 3k during acceleeration and have gotten best tank of 37mpg w/ the avg being 35. I think if you are gettin 18-20mpg w/ this engine there is something definitely wrong...

i get around 260-310 when the light comes on. and i drive like an **** half the time. always at least 10 mph over the speedlimit. moderate acceleration as the minimum.
