xB best crusin speed...

At 80 mph, your at about 4000 rpms. I would say that is a safe speed without draining all of your gas. Anything over, you will notice less MPG. To answer your specific question though, 80 mph is never "safe"in any car, but yes, the xB drives fine at that speed.

It's not safe to drive a car at all. At 65 mph (the speed limit many places) you are just as sure to crash into someone as you are at 80.
The answer is, it depends on how close you drive to cars in front of you and how good your brakes and emergency handling are and how good a driver you are.
Here in Arizona there are many stretches of highway where traffic moves at 75-80+ mph and you're alot safer moving with it than you are driving 60 mph like a grandma.
Forget the speed limit. Move with traffic and follow the 2 second rule. That is what is safest.
I can personally tell you that these cars feel perfectly safe and stable at 100 mph, as long as it's not a super windy day. I'm not suggesting you drive 100 mph, but if you are on a road with very few or no other cars, and you're out of town and the road surface is dry and in good condition, you can cruise at 100. I drove all the way to Sedona from here and averaged 90 mph and maintained 100 for 15 minutes at a time. It did have an effect of fuel economy but I never felt like the car was on the edge of control or anything.
I have no problem with people sticking to the speed limit. 95% of the time I drive within 10 mph of the posted speed limit myself. Just don't be a junior deputy traffic cop and drive 55-60 in the FAST lane when people want to pass. Don't be THAT guy.

I usually drive about 70 on a 65mph highway, and about 75 here in michigan. For all the incessant 'there's not enough power', I find myself often roaring up past 80 when I'm not paying attention (I have a fivespeed).
I averaged about 33mpg on my recent 1500 mile round trip to Bawstun.

I generally try to stay within 10 percent of the posted speed limits, which means on the freeways here locally I'll usually be between 60 and 75 MPH indicated, roughly 57 to 70 true.
I've had it in bursts up to just over 90 MPH indicated, and my xB was still perfectly stable. Surprisingly decent chassis!
Keep in mind that while the auto accelerates at a more leisurely pace than the stick, the auto is a more relaxed high speed cruiser because of the final ratio.
I'd say that the auto xB is happy cruising 55-85 MPH, though its fuel efficiency goes down rapidly at higher speeds because of it's brick-like profile... Mine really seems to like right around 70...

And yeah... any speed between 40-80 is fine on the auto... that's when you enter the final gear. I'd say it seems most comfortable at 65-70

However, after being stopped for above mentioned speeds I bought cruise control and usually keep it around 8 over the limit or whatever keeps with the flow of traffic.

I think the best mph for your buck is 60mph...at least on the 5spd. I think you'll get the best mileage that way. Also, don't modulate the throttle too much...
I personally go 80mph on all highways (unless there is construction)...
