xB Longevity - Need quick answer
Hi everyone,
I'm a new member...hopefully a soon-to-be owner as well. I have the chance to purchase a 2005 xB with 86,000 miles. They have it listed for $6,995...seems pretty good. It's an automatic.
The car itself is in good shape, but I was concerned with the mileage, especially for the relatively new age. I was wondering everyone's opinion on the longevity for 1st gen xB's. Does the engine/tranny hold up well? I know this forum will be mostly "biased" folks, but I'll hope for the best.
Thanks for the help!

Yes, the boxes hold up well. Some have gone 300,000+ already with no to few problems. The boxes are just like the Echoes and the Echoes last a long while, so there is no reason the boxes won't.

Thats about the right mileage for that year...Just make sure your not buying a salvaged/restored title...There are alot of those out there...You will love the xB, and Scion brand for the matter...They are pretty much bullet proof...Oil changes and basic maintenance and your good to go...

Guys, thanks so much for the quick feedback. I'm thinking it's a pretty good deal @ $7K. I wanted "quick" answers since he just got it yesterday as a trade-in....figured I might have to act quick. Thanks again!!

It is a local dealer...he said it had a "clean" title, but I'll get the Carfax for sure. I've been watching the local listings and craigslist in a 100 mile radius, but it's pretty slim pickin's. The only listings I've seen this cheap have been the rebuilt titles as you inferred.

from a dealer? make sure you offer like $5500-$6000 to start. that is unless you've already been in there saying how much you want it. i guess then you're kinda stuck. if you can play it like you are interested, but not sold on it, see if you can get the price down. last car i bought was a nice saturn for my wife and the sticker said $8800. we got it for $6000. KBB says it was worth $7000. just hold your ground and if you have to leave, then do it. I left and they called me back not 2 minutes down the road saying they now will agree to $6000.
buying a car is always a game. be the winner, not the loser.

Yeah, I'll do what I can on the price. I didn't act overly interested, but I did tell them that I'd come back after they had it detailed. It's a small dealer that typically prices well below the "big" dealers in town. I'll give an update on how things go...

Highway Miles
For what it's worth: I bought my 1st Gen. 2006 xB in May of '06. I now have 109,878 miles on it. It is a 5 speed manual. I drive mostly highway, keep it under 70 mph (mostly). I get 31-33 mpg - city/highway combined!
I had one little thing - a MF sensor replacement. Minor job.
Also, the door lock froze on me. Had to crawl in/out over the shifter, thru the passenger door, until the part arrived. Only a couple days - no big deal.
Really, the xB has been for me a GREAT commuter car. I have YET to replace the brake pads/shoes (I am 90% on highway, rarely brake).
I couldn't get a price from Kelly Bluebook. I think cuz of the high miles (doh!). And yet, it's only 3.5 years young. Sucks. Having paid this off a while ago, I'll probably keep it, for its dependability (cold weather starts, not a problem), then soon go shopping for my latest love: MINI Cooper.

I got my "toaster" today and love it. I'm not worried about the 86K miles. Runs like a champ.
Now I have to figure out what my first "upgrade" will be....leaning towards a new stereo with iPod input.

Thanks! It would definitely look "sleeker" with it lowered. However, I'd be concerned with our driveway...it's pretty steep.
We do get a bit of snow here in NWA, but I'd just leave the xB in the garage and take the Bronco out for some fun.
