I don't think so. The PT cruiser was marketed to middle aged housewives and designed to appeal to them. Not so with the xB. Besides, the xB is actually a good car (read: not based on the dodge neon) and an exceptional value. Who's going to complain about that?

Anyway, who fscking cares? If you're dumb enough to fall head over heels for the marketing on this car you get what you deserve. Yeah it's kind of cool, but buying one won't do anything for your graffiti skills or breakdancing technique.

 

My God, how awful to be selective as to who you want driving a car. Last time I checked the car is sold to everyone. I can't believe people on this board are being so elitist about this. a lot of people like to tune the xB, and in all honesty it's not the best car if your looking to turn it into a speed demon, it will just never do that. Nothin about this car leaps out at me and says, "Oh, that car is meant for young people!" The thing I think this car has going for it is its originality. To say someone shouldn't by this car for one reason or another is ludacris. I don't car who buys it. I want them to sell so that the company will make more cars like it. The NISSAN CUBE is on it's way to the USA, why do you think that is??

 

That would be nice. Chrysler sells a lot of PT Cruisers, there is a big aftermarket for them, and folks seem to enjoy driving a distinctive car.

The only real difference is that the xB will probably be more reliable!

Frankly, I don't want the xB to get a reputation as a "teen/twentysomething" car. That would do very bad things to insurance rates and resale value. I don't want the phrase "adult driven" to become common in classified ads for an xB!

Regardless of Toyota's marketing goals, it's better to have the vehicle appeal to a broad spectrum, as appears to be the case with the xB.

 

This 40 something believes that he lives harder, faster and more enthusiastically than most 20 sumpthings and is therefore entitled to buy one of these so-called kiddie cars. :D Age is irrelevant. Hell, the guy that was the director of the Scion marketing program at ATTIK in SF is a good burningman buddy of mine. He's a hip 40 something guy that figured out how to reach the "Y"ners and "market" a brand to them. And the 20 somethings are drinking what he's selling... :twisted:

Any article about scions will tell you that teenagers think toyotas are boring, frumpy cars. Toyota needed a new, hip product to keep itself in business after the baby boomers stop buying cars. Enter scion.

The whole "scion image" is marketing. It's designed to get teenagers like myself to buy scions. The concept is called lifestyle marketing, it's where you associate a certain lifestyle with a product. The idea was to make the scion associated with the young, hip, urban lifestyle. That's why all the xBs in the advertisements have 19s on them, it's why you can buy all those ridiculous options, and it's why they paid graffiti artists to do their magazine covers. And guess what? It worked, a lot of you are drinking their oh-so-hip kool-aid by the gallon.

News flash: you bought a car, not a lifestyle.

The xB is a perfect car for a 4 person family, especially if they already have a minivan. It can fit kids or adults in the back, and can carry a grip of groceries. If soccer moms want to start buying scions that's fine with me, I'm pretty sure they can be trusted not to rice them out like some people do. It'll also make insurance for them go down.

I don't get what the big deal is about scions becoming commonplace. I wouldn't complain if my favorite band went from local underground sensation to the top of the charts, but some people are so in love with being the first to get/know about something that they stop liking it when it becomes popular. In my opinion, that's dumb. Like the car for the car, not the whole stupid image around it and the cooler-than-thou feeling you get when you step out of it.

 

It'll also insure that 30 years from now, there will still be some stockers around when people re-discover xBs and want to restore them.

 

Unfortunately, in 30 years all the electronics will be well beyond their MTBF, Toyota will not be interested in producing antique replacements, and all the plastic, including critical engine components, will be turning into powder.

I think that the only way to have a classic Scion would be to buy a new one and store it in a controlled environment for 30 years.

You see a lot of '60s cars (made of metal, no electronics) around SoCal still, but how many cars from the '80s (lotsa plastic, some electronics) do you see?

There's only one difference between the younger guys crying that there's old people driving xB's, and the old people driving them - the old people's ride choice shows they are cool; in a few years we'll see the younger whiny people driving around in ___gy minivans after they get married and have kids, listening to the same tunes from when they were 20, whining and complaining about the new younger people's music and clothes.

I am 25 and a guy and I not only drive my daughter to soccer practice when she plays, I drive myself to soccer practice and games in my adult league. It's great to carry everything I need for practice and I can still fit my 6 year old daughter and my 11 month old son in the back. BTW I also have a great sound system that I am currently working on installing myself plus whenever I get money I will get rims and other mods. So I guess I am the soccer dad that all of you are so scared of buying the car. Guess what GET OVER IT!!!

 

Actually, the more soccer moms and old people that buy the car, the better. Why? It allows us youngins with fixed up boxes to go unnoticed by the cops.

If there are folks that get interested in restoring xB in 30 years, they'll find a way to get around whatever parts challenges they face. I agree that restoring cars from the 60's is likely a lot simpler than cars from the late 70/80's days of smog pumps and serpentine emission/vacuum lines. That said, I can share first hand that if substantial enough interest around a marque arises, parts will become available.

I have two older cars, as shown in my sig. The 78 Landcruiser is restored. I did have to go in a rework odd things like vacuum distribtuion boxes and even resoldered it's "computer", but nearly every nut, bolt, chrome bit, lens, interior **** and steel panel is available as an aftermarket item or in original new old stock. Granted the boxy FJ had a run of nearly 30 years here in the US- longer elsewhere, but the growth of the resto market drove the parts access.

My other 80's car, a turbo Porsche 951, is in the middle of it's restoration/hot rodding. It has far more complex computer systems, but this is actually even more fun. I have a Link AFM piggyback controller that hijacks and reads various sensor and Bosch computer signals and then modifies the signals out to provide more boost, more fuel, different timing, and allows for ultimate tunability with a little hand held controller. It dynoed last with just under 300 horsepower. This car wasn't around nearly as long as the FJ, but nearly every part is available at "some" price. And there are a lot of enthusiasts assuring that there is still a maket for it if I tire of the little turbo hotrod.

The xB could grow into an enthusiasts car to such proporations that it has value after the trend disipates. I don't have a crystal ball, but I do have a hunch that at some time it will. And at that time, the restorers will look at the quaint electronics and fab up replacements or etch new boards or build a USB 5 patch cable to control the whole thing remotely from the back seat while they're watching old movies from the 2010's on their holographic displays. :D

Reality is that the car is a great value, and it looks good. I'm 32, I have a 4 year old son, and I mod the car too, so where do I sit in the mix? Are you going to throw rocks at me because Im not in my 20's and mod cars?

I dont understand why you guys are getting your panies in a bundle. It's a car not a 18 and over exclusive club pass thats some 30+ yr. old aquired.

You know, different people have different priorities, and if someone with young kids looks at the xB and sees that it has as much room as a small SUV, but the kids won't have to climb in and out of it...c'est la vie! In fact, two friends of ours just had a kid, and I was totally pimping my box to them!
