Default Custom license plate

Does anyone know what the law is about custom license plates? i.e. license plates that aren't from the state. BTW I live in CA. Thanks in advance for the input!

Sorry I wasn't more specific. I mean, if I have the plate from the state on the rear, can I have a decorative plate in the front? Kinda like how the bimmers have those chrome plates with just the bimmer emblem on them.

a lot of people ride with Euro-plates on the front, but you do need the real one on too

what that is "about" is because in lots of parts of so cal, we have traffic cameras... as you run the red lights, the cams get shots of the front and rear of your vehicle.. having proper plates in front and back helps the man give you tickets ... after 3 tickets for no front plate, i kinda get it now...
it is only a fix it ticket if you get one... go to the court house, get it signed off when you put your dmv plate on there, and pay $10 court filing fee...
Also, the California Vehicle Code states that the plate "must be securely mounted to the front bumper" so if officer dick wants to be a real jerkoff, he can write you up for having the front plate on the dash in the windshield, even though most all drivers can see it there..

Illinois requires front and rear plates also... some states don't.

I'd be wary of keeping the plate loose on the dash. You don't really want a piece of metal flying at your head in an accident, would you? They do make suction cup mounts for the dash too, though.

I also see people with their real plate mounted below the fake one, but why would you want all those plates on the car.

Here is the sticky from the Pacific South Regional forum:

Sometimes when I go to a show I put on my "Old Yeller" replica plates after I arrive.

basically, it's a "do at your own risk" type of thing.. some cops will get you on it, some won't... in ca it's a 10$ fix it ticket, but do you really want to have a sherriff do an inspection on your car even if only to sign off on a front plate? once they start looking at the car, they can get you for modified suspention, tint, modified engine, etc...

You gotta have them in Cali. That's a perfect excuse for a cop to pull you over. And if a cop doesn't get you, parking enforcement will. Believe me I've got at least 4 different tickets for that from parking enforcment.

geez. Cali needs to loosen up a bit. It seems as tho the REALY expensive cars can get away with whatever they want like dark tint and not having license plates. Totally sucks...oh well...maybe it's time to move. HAHA jk. I love the weather here too much
